We just returned from AR after taking the toy hauler up there for spring break. Beautiful country, but pulling 9 mpgs and paying $4 gallon for diesel makes it too expensive to make it worth while. I'm parking the trailer for a while and next time it will be as close to home as possible. I doubt the prices will make any drastic downward changes soon.

We're also going to be spending more time close to home this year.I was just talking to the other half this weekend I might have to get an other hobby that doesn't cost to much.

We are also going to stay closer to home. TV is no longer used as a secondary vehicle, run just enough to prevent problems.

By the time you pay fuel, food, campsite, etc, we were almost as much in the hole as if we just went down to Galveston and picked up a 5 day cruise! - Without all the hassle of spending a day driving up and a day driving back. I love camping, but I couldn't relax as much as I usually do thinking about what the whole thing is costing. In the end, just thinking about all that alone makes it not worth it.

We take X number of dollars out of every paycheck and put in our camping fund, we have all our expenses covered for this year and we are now working on next year.

We will be putting more miles on the truck this year than we have the last couple of years.

Take some friends. They'll chip in for fuel costs and food.

The more the merrier!

Change is hard for most of us (fuel prices), but if you have the dream to RV then it shouldn't stop you. The way to succeed is usually hidden just beyond your everyday thinking. Rework the budget, be creative, ask 'how' from those who do. Above all, make your dream run your check book...not your check book limit your dream. When diesel hit my threshold (in Seattle) of $4/gal, I raised my threshold! I am a dreamer...believing is seeing! I wish you great success in finding a way to keep on RV'ing. You are worth it!

We are trying to go the same amount, but just not as far. Instead of a trip to Arkansas this year, we are going to the north Georgia mountains. We will still have as much fun.

Not to rain on the RVing parade, but in researching costs to fly (especially when specials are running) we've found we can go a lot farther for much less money than if we RV'd. Not that we're giving up RVing, but this is certainly worthy of consideration, at least for us. Now, I realize many people have this fixation of 'sleeping in their own bed' and I partly understand that, but if you're looking into a nice vacation and money matters, you may want to look into flying. There are flight and hotel deals all over the internet, and rather than not going (or going someplace close to home just to be going) it might be worth looking into. Just a suggestion as an alternative to low-mpg and high fuel prices.

I don't think fuel is ever going down again. I also think we can add another dollar to each gallon of gas and diesel by summer. I had $1200 rat holed for fuel for a late winter trip to Yuma which got cancelled. Right now that equals 300 gallons of diesel which will be more than adequate for all my planned outings this summer. This Fall we are going to the Oregon Coast and may have to dig a little deeper for fuel money but we are going!! Even if I have to find a job next winter to replace our savings!! Next year, who knows. Everything may go to the salvage yard, move to a warmer climate and ride mopeds year round.
