-5 degrees tent camping in Mesa Verde. Did a lot of winter camps when I lived in Colo, and I can't really say how cold it was in those mountains in mid February. But NOTHING can hold a candle to 34 degrees and pouring rain in Sebring Florida. Just clear through to the bone cold. You will be fine. A good bag, the heaters. And that is an excellent suggestion about putting the kids on the inside bunk. Those little bodies lose heat fast. Have Fun, winter time can be the most rewarding time to camp.

That would be the litmus test for success. If you couldn't get the kids to come in, it couldn't have been too cold for them!

A bad day camping is better than a good day at work.

Yellowstone, about 15 degrees in early June. Decided to head south and out of the mountains after the 3rd night.

Our first PUP trip was a little rental that we took to Yellowstone for a week in early June. We ran the furnace every night and came home with battery and propane. We didn't run anything during the day.
Furnace was noisy be kept us plenty comfortable. I'm sure the temps were in the teens.

Coldest we ever camped was one March at Grand Canyon. Couldn't find a spot in any campgrounds so we just drove off down a dirt road along some BLM land and set up our tent. We were in our bags with comforters and blankets on top - and were still fairly cold. Water bottles froze solid by am.

In the 20's is as low as I have camped in my PUP. While the furnace does great, the tent ends tend to get a bit chilly. An electric blanket would have been nice.

Well we are back from our chilly weekend of camping. It went well.... The kids never woke up during the night so they must have been pretty cozy in their sleeping bags. I would definitely like to get the heated matress pads though.

Sounds like you had a great trip - and hopefully many more to follow...
Thanks for sharing this with us...

Yup, been there done that. But didn't get the frostbite! Coldest I've camped in with my pup was -10C, with no hookups. I didn't fill the water tank. Didn't really have to run the fridge either. My stand-alone water pump turned into a block of frost, and all the water lines coming up from the lake froze. Even my sink drain line outside the trailer froze!!

And no, you don't need the furnace all the time. I only ran ours when getting up, or when I was in the trailer doing dishes or making food. At bed time it got run once then turned right off. I had a comforter below me, a sheet, another comforter, and several blankets above me. Plus my t-shirt, shorts, and toque. And yea, I was toasty! Was actually sweating while asleep!!!!

Cheers!
Mike

I once slept under the stars when I was in the Army when it was about -20. The Northern Lights were magnificent, but other than that it was friggin miserable.

I might have the winning numbers, maybe.

Just this last January I took my Boy Scouts to Rice Lake Wisconsin for winter camping. They wanted to earn their Polar Bear badges. We tent camped, so no popup or warm furnace. Just warm sleeping bags and proper clothing.

We trained and prepared, and it was good we did! The overnight temps got to -28 at the worst. The picture below shows the temp at 5am in the morning when I woke up. The sound of trees cracking in the night was really something.

All I know is it was so cold that at night we had the furnace on and three Cat heaters and the water in the glass by my bed still froze.
