We are looking for a kid friendly campground near NW Indiana for a quick trip. Does anybody happen to know of a campground open this time of the year (early spring)?

Found a new State park less than an hour away. Prophetstown State Park...the playground is open, paved bicycle trails, hiking trails, a working 1920's farm and native American camp to tour. Looks like we are going there for our quick little spring break trip.

The Last Resort Campground in Hanna, which is just east of Valparaiso is open April 1. They have a playground, fishing pond, horseshoes, volleyball, and a rec room/area. The only drawback is that they are right next to hwy 30 which does make for some noise. The owners are very accomodating and very friendly.Phone # 219-797-camp

Prophetstown may or may not have the working farm & native village staffed this time of year. You may want to call about that. I do believe the CG is open all year, though.

All Indiana State Park Camp Grounds open March 1, Farm and Village are staffed...they are going to allow the children to help with chores tomorrow afternoon. If only I could get my kids excited to do chores at home! ;-)

UPDATE
Prophetstown State Park is a VERY nice campground. The bike and hiking trails are in the wide open prairie though so a little long and difficult in the wind.

The farm was partially staffed and the kids had a riot helping collect eggs and do chores. They were very disappointed because they couldn't milk a cow - she had just had a calf and is nursing. We had a great time especially for such a short drive. Thumbs up!

Good to know about Prophetstown- it's on our list now. Sounds like your family might also like Spring Mill State Park. That's on our list too, haven't been but it sounds great. We also like Brookville and the nearby town of Metamora is super cute and the kids have an absolute blast. Ride the train or the canal boat.

We camped at spring mill two summers ago. It used to be splendid when I was a kid and I bragged to my family about how awesome it was for over a year. My wife finally said "let's go". I was extremely disappointed as the lake has filled in with sediment and the state doesn't have enough money to dredge it. It is now a wetland for birds...no beach, no boating, no fishing. The park and cg was ok...cave tour by boat, decent pool, clean cg. My boy loves fishing so he and I hiked half-way around the lake to where I remembered was a small dam. Sure enough we found it and fished the base and caught a few large mouth bass, so the trip was not a total loss. Still a good time, just thought I'd let you know. If you haven't been there in the past you probably wouldn't even know better. ;-)
