The wife and I have been talking about a trip to New Mexico and wondered if any one has any good info on a place to stay around Cloudcroft area. We will be coming in from the Texas side thru Mayhill.

My suggestion would be to go to Ruidoso/Alto instead. There is not much in Cloudcroft, but much more in Ruidoso and you get the mountains. (for instance, there are not really any grocery stores in Cloudcroft, air, but there is a Sam's and WalMart in Ruidoso, etc)

Cloudcroft is worth a day-trip, IMHO. I particularly enjoyed the nearby solar observatory.

Here is the link http://www.forestcamping.com/dow/southwst/linccmp.htm for some of the campgrounds in the area. Watch out for the dates when open, most are not open all year. Apache, Silver and Saddle are all at the same location, about 2 miles for Cloudcroft, each one is back farther off the main road but it is paved for all of them. Hope this helps.

Stay at Oliver Lee State Park. Right down the mountain from Cloudcroft in Alamogordo. I was just there a couple of days ago. The views are spectacular. You can see white sands in the distance. We could even hear the sound of missile's being tested at the White Sands Missile Range. It's not loud like a bomb. Interesting sound for sure.

Another plus is that it's only 14 dollars a night for Water and Electricity at all New Mexico State Parks.

If you like to "boondock" there are hundreds of places up around sunspot in the national forest off of good forest service roads. You might have some snow problems this time of year but I'm not sure. You can find a spot and literally not see anyone for days if you go back country far enough. We did this a couple of years ago when we lived in Carlsbad.

IMHO Ruidosa is very congested, as where cloudcroft isn't. Oliver Lee SP is a good location as well, with nice clean facilities and about 10 miles South of Alamogordo. If you want more info on boondocking places, send me an private message and I can help you spot some of these places on google earth.
