My 05 V-10 was F-350, LB,CC Dually with the 4:30's towing the 13K 5th wheel. It averaged around 8 towing the 13K fifth wheel, 11/12 solo. Diesels never liked short drives and the new ones are even worse. They are defiantly not in city drivers. My V-10 done good..so is my 6.4L

I have read somewhere that if u plan on putting 100k on a diesel truck then it's worth the extra money. I just bought a Durango 35 fter and have a 99 F-250 short bed with the V-10 and only 42k on it. I hope to use it about 15 times a yr but it isn't my main auto,,,i use my Goldwing on a daily bases....and the wive's car when we go out or travel with her......otherwise it's the WING for me...

I got a very good deal on my PSD and love driving it. It is not my daily driver just the week ends and towing. I also have a f150 gasser and keep fuel consumption records on both. The 150 looked like it was costing less per mile until I removed the old fuel costs. With current costs over the last year on both the gas 150 costs me .16 a mile, the psd costs .17 and that is factoring in the towing on the psd. I haven't towed with the 150 this last year but when I did the mileage was terrible and the hills were not fun. I would still get a PSD with the current prices because I feel I could get a real good deal on it since it seems no one wants them now. I do my own maintenance so the cost is not that bad and the longevity I hope will pay off. I do believe this would the last truck I would need to buy.

If you are talking new then the V-10 is the way to go. For 08 the diesels had to meet new EPA standards which have just about wiped out the MPG advantage that they had in previous years. Ford is so concerned with the poor MPGs that starting with the 2008 job 3 trucks they are offering a larger air dam and 3.55 gears on the diesels. Of course 3.55 gears takes away some of the diesels pulling power.

Depends on how long you are going to keep the truck. When the V-10 reaches mid life at 100k miles, the diesel will be just getting broken in.
If your daily ride is short, its not good for a diesel. It really needs to warm up.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe thata you get the Tow-Haul tranny with the diesel.
Also if you go to trade it in the resale on the diesel will be much higher than the V-10.
Diesel is higher here due too the winter blend. In order for the beasts to start they mix a % of # 1 diesel (kerosene) with # 2 diesel so they will start easier. Winter has been long and everyone here is still using a lot of heating oil.

If I could find someone with a comparable ford short box with extended cab and V 10, I would be willing to swap them even up with my psd.
For now the psd just sits around and I bum the wife's toyota when she will loan it to me for just knocking around.

I would go the diesel for many reasons, although I wouldn't go with the ford ( at least the new ford 6.4) AS others have posted the diesel pulls night and day better than any gasser, torque is what pulls not horsepower. I pull an 8,000lb trailer with a 7.3ltr diesel ford and get 15mpg all day long on flat ground. With fuel a $4.00/gal that equates to around 27c per mile. My Dad pulls the same trailer with his gas chevy V8 5800 and gets 7mpg which equates to around 48c per mile with gas as $3.40/gal. Thats a 22c per mile difference with diesel costing 60c/gal more. With the diesel costing $6,000 more than the gas it will take you around 27,000 miles to pay for the extra pulling power.
Now if I were in the market today for a new truck, I would buy a chevy duramax with the allison trany, you cant go wrong especially if you get a 4x4, the ride is far superior than the ford. If your buying this truck to pull, then you need to do the comparison of gas and diesel while pulling. The gas engine requires alot more fuel to generate the same torque as the diesel, which equates into mileage. If your not pulling and primarily doing short trips then the gas may win.
Just my .02c. Do the math and choose what makes cents.

If your daily driving is short - then you'll kill a diesel. They have to run 10-20 miles just to get to operating temp.
You get more torque from a diesel, but a v10 with 4.30 (a $50 upgrade) or better gears will pull as much weight with out any issues.
The v10 is a tried and true engine - no matter what year it is. The newer 3v engine pump out more HP and Toque than the older engines did (more comparable to diesels). The 6.4 on the other hand, has not been around long and has already had some issues and if it's like it's predecessor (the 6.0)... well, the track record is not that great.
So IMHO - I'd go for the v10.

I went with the diesel for longevity purposes. Just remember the price diff. between gas/diesel will level out sometime. They will not stay on this pattern long and I think in the end they will get closer and closer together. That is when the diesel will really make the difference. Do not look at just the now but also look at the future when making the choice. Go with what you want. You only live once anyways... Have fun.....
