Not sure if this is the right place to ask but....
Anyone have or know someone who has a Gear Vendor auxillary underdrive/overdrive installed on their tow vehicle or motorhome?? I'd like to know how they perform when towing.

Back in the '80's when I worked at a Ford Heavy Truck dealership, we installed both Gear Vendor and U.S. Gear auxillary transmissions for customers.

The Gear Vendor was far superior to the U.S. Gear unit, as it shifted smoother especially for the novice trying to shift such a unit. The U.S. Gear shifted more like a two speed rear axle unit and made frequent noises when not syncronized with engine RPM.

Not sure what application you are looking for, but GV is a good unit. The only difficult thing about the installation is making sure that the driveline angle is within specs after shortening the driveshaft. The electrics are basically plug and play and the installation of the unit is pretty straight forward with the possible exception of fabricating a mount.

I have one installed on a '06 550. It works great. My mileage goes up considerably when truck is empty, but when I'm fully loaded it's not a such a big difference.

My dad had a GV unit installed in his '90 Chevy dually with 454 and 4.10s. He went from about 3500rpms at 65 to about 1/2 that.

It seems to be a well built unit and does exactly what it says it will.

It worked for him.
