Long term success is questionable. Folks continue to eat " Funions " and DQ snacks. Also, since they can't eat large meals, they learn to graze all day.

True, and they can stretch out the stapled stomach, too. Our relative who had gastric bypass surgery could eat a lot more than I do at a single meal within two months of surgery. If *only* there was a little chip that could be put in the brain to stop that "never enough" feeling. It's so sad.

Some of us are just born hungry. Very difficult to remain hungry most of the time in this land of feast and plenty. I wish to all the best of luck and strength in their struggles. I hope to never need such drastic measures as surgery.

I had the RNY gastric bypass seven years ago. I lost 155 lbs. Yes, I did gain 15% back, but they told me I probably would. However, I can walk without being out of breath. I am off 13 prescription meds (everything from diabetes to high blood pressure). I don't regret the surgery at all...I just wish I had done it 10 years earlier. I do personally believe the success rate is better with RNY over Lapband. If you want more opinions, visit www.obesityhelp.com.

On the news today I heard that Carnie Wilson (the singer) had gained back her weight even though she had surgery to reduce her stomach, she got thin, then went back up to 200 pounds.

Keep in mind that she did get pregnant and have a baby. She stated recently that she is having some trouble taking off the baby weight but that she will get it off. Unfortunately there are a many factors working against her when it comes to the weight gain with having a baby.

I started on that program from the TLC channel on Sunday nights, "I can make you thin" and it's working (I like it because you can eat what you want, no diet foods, it just trains you to eat slower, eat consciously, and yesterday they showed how to control emotional eating in about 30 seconds.....next week it's on how to stop cravings.

I watched this program Sunday night--missed the first one the week before. My daughter told me about it. She was very impressed with what she learned and has lost 4 pounds eating "consciously".

At least with the lap band, you have not permanently altered your innards.
Well, in a way, you have. The band itself is a foreign object wrapped around your stomach -- and it stays in your body forever. Doesn't sound good to me at all.

I know three people that have had the lap band surgery done and have all had varying results. My friend Penny has had very few problems with hers, and has lost about 50 lbs. since last October. She did say that you must eat small bites and eat very slowly or else you have horrible pain.

My mom has two friends who've had the surgery and both have had some problems with it, including a lot of nausea and vomiting. Her friend Heidi has lost about 60 lbs., but her friend Marsha has has all KINDS of problems including infections, etc. She's lost very little weight, and has spent so much time in the hospital that she's got hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills. Her body keeps rejecting the lap band and she has either had it removed or is going to have it removed any day now (I'd have to ask my mom about the time frame on that).

All that being said, on January 1, 2008 I started eating only WHOLE foods. I eliminated wheat, dairy, sugar, processed foods, caffeine and alcohol from my diet. I eat a TON, but it's all natural, healthy stuff. I've lost 25 lbs and I feel better than I have in YEARS. To top it off, my skin looks great and people keep telling me how fabulous and HEALTHY I look!

There is no quick solution. If you have surgery but still fill you body with chemicals and preservatives your success will be short lived -- period. Healthy food and exercise is the only permanent solution.

Haven't had it done, myself. But I have assisted on many lap band surgeries, as well as stomach reduction, and roux-en-Y. And cared for the patients post-op. The fastest results come from roux-en-Y, but the most complications also come from that procedure. It creates a permanent state of malnutrition in the body, so you lose weight, but also lose the ability to absorb many essential nutrients, have a higher rate of adhesions with the chance of small bowel obstruction, etc. Lap band is removeable, adjustable, offers quick recovery, and minimal post-op pain and scarring. The weight loss is slower, but more natural and safe. Regardless of which procedure is done, it is imperative that you follow the diet instructions faithfully. Living on milkshakes and gravy will defeat the lap band, but eating frequent small meals of solid and nutritious foods will prevent hunger or feeling overstuffed, and will bring about a slow and steady weight loss, with less of the skin sagging and other problems often seen in a rapid weight loss. About 80% of patients who successfully lose weight through weight loss surgeries are able to minimize or eliminate the need for meds for diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, etc. The remaining 20% or so are mostly those who waited until their health problems were too far advanced, and even they experience significant improvement. Get all the information you can, make sure your surgeon also involves a dietician and psychiatrist or psychologist in the process, make the choice of procedure that you are most comfortable with, and prepare to become a new person. Best of luck to you.

I've been reading a little about this surgery, can anyone tell me if they have had it or know someone who has. And how has it helped or not helped.

I have thought about it and researched it but insurance doesnt cover it so I wont get it.

I have a friend who had it done and is doing very well & has lost almost 100lbs.
