Hi All,
Just bought my first diesel.(Bad timing I know) It's an 08'Chevy. Just wondering how everyone is configuring all the bells and whistles for towing ,such as,are you towing in "D" useing the tow haul,or "M" doing something different. Also , are there any brands of diesel that you would stay away from? Any advise anyone has would be appreciated. Just want to do things right, and get the most out of a stock truck. Thanks in advance.

I tow in D with the tow haul mode on. As far as diesel goes Bio-Diesel is a detergent if you use regular diesel then get a tank of Bio-diesel then the bio-diesel can clean your tank out real good and plug your fuel filter. Any way that is the story around here so I stay away from the stuff. I don't need to change a filter on the side of the road.

We also have a new Chevy diesel and are on our first trip. We will be out 3 months and so far have two weeks in. We keep it in "D" and use the tow mode, sit it at 60 and it keep us at 60 going up a hill and down, I'm impressed. We just let the Allison do it's thing.
We live in Minnesota and the only diesel that is sold is 5% bio and they are thinking of requiring 10%, I really see little difference in Minnesota diesel or what we buy on the road it works great. I have some friends that are using 20% bio and tell me they are not having any problems. I would use it if I could find it as we travel.

Buy your diesel from a station that sells a lot of diesel. As far as driving, I leave it "D" on the open road. I only put it in "M" if I'm sitting in a traffic jam or on a side street. Enjoy the truck!

I did some reading where they took an 02 Ford truck and ran 100% bio for a month, then pulled the filter and it was just like new, even though the truck had 80K on regular diesel. If I didn't know better, I get the feeling we'll never get the OK on anything but what the man's selling.

Just remember, if you are using the "D" mode, the allison does its job, if you use the "M" mode, you are working the trans, not the computer/truck, the auto braking from the allison does not work while in the "M" mode...

This may be a redundant reminder but ALWAYS look at the diesel pump to make sure it has a ULSD decal, if not I would not use that in my 2008 Chevy 3500 DA DRW LB.

I rarely use the tow/haul in my 2008 Dodge. It sometimes retards my speed downhill when I don't feel it's needed. I would use it in the mountains and I REALLY like the factory standard exhaust brake with the diesel.
