I have the chance to pick up a 90 Wrangler 6 with a 5 speed for almost nothing. There are no books with it and I am not sure about the towing set up for behind my motorhome. What positions are the the tranny and transfer box suppose to be in? Seems to me that on my old 76 model it was transfer box and tranny both in neutral? Can someone who actually tows one or has towed one give the correct info.

Thanks

Transfer case in neutral, tranny in any gear, I like 5th. Key on to unlock the steering.

Exactly what I did on my '92.

In my '98 Wrangler, it was key OFF, NOT LOCKED, but not ON, transfer case in Neutral, transmission in gear. If the front axle is equipped with lock-out hubs, the hubs should be in the ENGAGED position, according to an old Owner's Manual that I have.
I haven't investigated, but I have heard that the Owner's Manuals are available for free download at the Jeep website. They may also be available from eBay, and the dealer should be able to order one for you, or tell you where to order it from.
I have towed Jeeps several thousand miles, with an inexpensive A-frame 5000 pound capacity towbar. The Jeep is a great towed.

First, I'll say I have towed a 1980 CJ7 with a DANA 300 transfer case thousands of miles without a problem. I had the trans in first, transfer case in neutral, front hubs unlocked and key in the first unlocked position. I went to some Jeep rallies and the prevailing remarks were that I was stupid and crazy for doing this. The DANA 300 is an oil slinger with no oil pump so it isn't getting much oil slung around when flat towing. Some DID say that locking the front hubs helps as that makes the front output shaft turn and slings some oil. After 97, Wranglers don't have Dana 300's and were ok to flat tow. If you do a google for "jeep towing dana 300" you will get various posts about both sides of the argument. Thought you would want to know there are differing opinions. I don't know what the Jeep owners manual says, never had one. I flat towed my 97 Wrangler regularly.

The 1987 and newer Wranglers have a NP, or NV 231 Transfer case, they are the same just different manufacturer, Rubicons and the new JK's are different, with either a AX 5 or AX 15 transmission, if it is manual. They should be towed with the transfer case in neutral, and the transmission in gear, you pick which one. Most people place them in a higher gear so that if the transfer case slips into gear, don't know how that would happen actually, the engine won't be trying to turn 20,000 rpms at highway speeds if it is in 1st gear. Automatics should be towed the same way with the transmission in gear or park.

My '97 Jeep GC manual says transfer case in Neutral and the trans in Park. Full time four wheel drive.
