I have been reading on different posts that while traveling through long tunnels, one is required to turn off the propane prior to entering. I have traveled I-77 through Virginia many times (without my RV) and don't recall seeing any signs stating RV's to shut off propane. I have not seen 5'ers or TT pulling over to shut off propane.
There are two tunnels along 77 in Virginia, that I will be traveling through. (Big Walker Mountain? and another I cannot remember the name). Any info would be appreciated.

I've travelled through both of them many times and have not seen any signs (or stopped either).
With the OPD valves that the tanks are now equipped with I don't think the dangers are as pronounced as they once were. I only travel with one tank on at a time.

Looking at Google Maps (Satellite view), I don't see any place set up to pull over for a safety check on the tunnels along I-77. Here's a link I found with a bit more information on the tunnels. There's some contact phone numbers if you drill down a few pages.
The tunnels I've been through (Washington DC and Norfolk VA) had propane checks because the tunnels were under water. I don't know if that was the only reason. Whereas the tunnels along I-40 between Ashville, NC and Knoxville KY had no propane checks anywhere.
Good luck.

I have traveled this route many times and have never stopped to turn off the propane. If you had to shut off the propane, they would have to have a rest area before each one of these tunnels just for the traffic.

No restrictions for East River Mtn or Big Walker Mtn tunnels. However, there is construction going on inside the tunnels a couple of days each week and there is plenty of advanced warning. Goes down to one lane and speed limits decreased.

Call VDOT (Click Here) and ask them. You can't get any more dependable information then that.

It has been a long time cause my dw does not like to go that way. I do think there was a restriction on transporting large quantities of propane, fuel and explosives, etc. As a commercial driver, one has to look for those signs. I do remember signs warning commercial carriers to detour over a road that I would not want to travel in a big rig. Seems to me that it was VA 52? One other thing from the U.S Title 49 CFR100-185 - "If you are hauling hazardous material, you should choose your routes carefully, avoiding routes that go through or near: heavily populated areas, places where crowds gather , and tunnels, narrow streets, or alleys". That applies to truckers, not RVers (unless you are hauling more that you ought to be). Propane is a hazardous material in certain quantities. Now that I'm not piloting a big rig down the road, I only look for the signs that apply to me. It is amazing the things I have missed over the years, just because I was busy doing my job.
