I did the same as BFL13...It also gives you a second valve in case the main one fails. If you put it outboard of a clear accessory attachment, you can see if anything's amiss.
But sometimesthe gremlins win!

I purchased from camping world a twist on slide valve to fit on the end of the trailers dump pipe. The swivel adapter of the sewer hose mounts right up to the slide valve. There will not be anymore spilling of waste water. I can also regulate the speed of the water going into the hose so the hose stays in one place. Seems there was always a suprise when you open the termination cap to put on your sewer hose. Not any more.

Am I doing something wrong? I don't cap mine. I have a 45degree clear plastic extension on the junction of the black and gray tank drains that I attach my slinky to. I do not cap the output of that when I remove the hose.
I drain the black, drain the gray, flush the black, quick flush the gray, close the valves and remove the hose.

I had a similar issue years ago when we had our camper worked on. For what ever the reason the shop opened all three tank valves (bath, black, kitchen). I did not catch it before our next trip. When I got ready to dump I discovered the problem. Not only did I have the same initial dump issue you had but my gray tanks were now mixing fluids with the black tank. What a mess. Closed all the valves and held the 3 inch drain hose under the cap and cracked the cap to slowly drain the pipe down stream of the valves; then proceeded to dump. Before we started home I put bleach in the gray tanks with about 10g of water. The idea was as we drive home the sloshing of the water/bleach mixture would clean the gray tanks.
From that point forward I now always check my valve settings before heading out on a trip.

When I am prepping the TT for a trip I wash the TT, check the tires and lugnuts and then while squatting by the tires I push in on both tank valves to make sure no one has pulled them while parked. When I am setting up at a CG, before I uncap the drain I always push in on the Black tank valve just to make sure...

Mine did the same thing a while back. I think while traveling there was some vibration that may have caused the valve to open slightly - it doesn't take much of an opening to cause a leak, and over a period of minutes or hours you can lose a lot of "stuff". I bought a clear plastic extension to attach to the sewer pipe, and now even if the valve leaks, there are NO SURPRISES. You can look at the extension and see if anything has leaked BEFORE unscrewing the cap. Why is it that it's always the BLACK tank that leaks?

Not sure why you washed the shoes and gloves before you through them out. You didn't actually keep them, did you?

Let's say you have been getting away with it. Seems like they always dribble somewhat from paper getting in the knife valve or whatever.
Another handy thing is the cap with the hose connection lets you drain off grey water into a bucket you can dump in a ditch somewhere, instead of having to move the trailer to a sani-dump. On ours the grey tanks fill up long before the black tank does, so being able to do that is a blessing.
