Does anyone know if a prius can be towed behind an rv as long as the front tires are off the ground. The owners manuel is not quite that informative. I know its front wheel drive and that front wheels cannot be on the ground while towing. but can it be towed with a tow dolly for long distances without damaging anything.

That's a good question (but should be in the Towed forum). I've been wondering if there is any regenerative circuity in the rear wheels or are they freewheeling?

Short answer: yes, if the vehicle is on a tow dolly. The only concern the mfgr has is that the tranny is not made for towing 4 down. I tow a Honda Civic on a tow dolly and have logged many k miles and never had an issue with the car. The mfgr did have a warning that it was not towable, but just not towable 4 down.
By the way, I like my tow dollie because it tracks well and has electric brakes that do help, even though I have air brakes.

I towed my 05 Prius on a dolly. Towed about 2600 miles this winter in ice and snow and some wind. It was without problem. Once when I unloaded it took about 1000 ft of rolling under power for my idiot lights to go off including the brake lights. I had read about this in another post so wasn't concerned but it was nice to know I didn't have a problem. Remember you place it in park and power down. Do not lock emergency brake. It sure does improve your average miles per gallon using the Prius for side trips and moho for basic traveling. Good luck.

The regenerative function in a Toyota hybrid drive comes from one of two electric motor/generators incorporated into the hybrid synergy drive (HSD). The HSD functions as a transmission that drives the front wheels. There are no regenerative function in the rear wheel assembly.
And yes, the Prius can be safely towed with the front wheels off the ground, accordingto the owner's manual.
