Luke Porter:

You have not been here and only posted that to " get me" Shame shame. The police were here last night. Hundreds of kids have been arrested. One died after falling off the back of a P.U. last weekend. The music is still going this a.m. I wonder how many girls got pregnant last nite or were raped?? These are someones kids. What if it were yours? Do you think that telling some dumb joke is the way to handle a serious problem.

For every one else:

My original post is not directly RV related. I posted it for 2 reasons. Firstly, If you are planning on being in a beach area at this time of year do your research first to find out if this spot is popular with the kids. Secondly, There is a side to Mexican culture that is not nice ( as there is for any culture). Wild partying is a real problem . These kids make the American and Canadian youth look like choir boys. It is directly related to drinking habits. Alcoholism and drug use is rampant in Mexico. I think they may have surpassed the USA. Yesterday one of the local contractors was working on a job. Two 13 year old kids entered the jobsite and asked him if they wanted to buy Cocaine. He is pure as the driven snow and told them to leave. Apparently heavy duty drugs are a bargain in Mexico. I guess some people will now cross the border for a bottle of vanilla and a few grams of their favorite.

JDTrotter:

The local Mexican people are great. We probably know half of the families in Kino. Their children are not the problem. It is the invasion by wealthy youth from Hermosillo and other states. Think Daytona Beach. We have a new to Kino old pumper truck at the fire department. I wish they would turn the hoses on the kids. Seems to escalate every year. Eventually there will be riots and multiple deaths.

We feel the same way about our pueblo---I was just happy they do their end of the week celebration out at San Roque. They just like to party later than we do. Last wedding we attended we left at 1AM and they were still dancing at 5AM.

But, believe me, the celebration out at San Roque is NOTHING in comparison to what you have there. Even when they pave the road, we hope we stay rather isolated. Some camping areas become VERY crowded, but for the most part, they are crowded with families and that is a VERY different story.

It is just strange around our little town to have it soooo quiet and empty for a few days.

Moisheh, we had anticipated a lot of noise and kids and we were not surprised. Last night as the density of traffic increased, we went for a T-bone steak at Marlin in old Kino. It took us about an hour to maybe an hour and 15 minutes to get back to Bella Vista in new Kino. We had fun all the way. I opened the sun roof, all of the windows, and tuned in satellite radio to a Blues station, and pumped up the volume. We were hanging out of the windows and were "high five" slapping hands with many of the kids when we were moving. The amazing thing was that from the beginning to bedtime, we never encountered a single insult of any kind. The kids were having fun and so were we. I agree, the zero tolerance police policy on open containers in vehicles and on the street went to hell pretty quickly, however, we felt safe in all of the traffic because every 10th or 15th vehicle was a police vehicle. We never moved forward at more than 1 or 2 mph. Once a year, we can handle, and even enjoy, a weekend like this. My only complaint is I am getting a little tired of hearing "Popeye the sailor man" on that darned old ice cream truck. Viva Mexico!

Best regards,
Larry

Actually what's really entertaining is to see that some people are experts at criticising other posters no matter what the forum. This whole thread is just one more reason to stay away from the Mexico-lite destinations like Kino.

This is a regional phenomenon in my opinion. We are 15 minutes from a major playground for people of all ages and from many countries - Playa Del Carmen. "Playa" is also a major destination for wealthy Mexico City and Merida people. The main street, Quinta Avenida (5th Ave) is shoulder to shoulder with people. We have seen no (none, nada) public drunkeness anywhere this week in spite of the popularity of the place with youth - both Mexican and international.

These wild Easter Week epicenters seem to be close to the U.S. border - Kino Bay, Rocky Point, San Felipe, etc. Keep in mind that the original "teens gone wild" film and video came from the U.S. Palm Beach, Palm Springs, and other hormone centers were exported internationally by MTV. I think there is a bit of imitation going on here and the allure of the border no-man's-land is a magnetic edge for those seeking that atmosphere.

Moiseh, you are too smart to be in Kino during this week. Why not turn your house over to some nice local people you trust and take a vacation yourself?

Hi Kevin:

We do have someone who looks after our house when we are away but they stay away from New Kino during Devil Week. You are correct that they are imitating the American kids. Last nite I was attacked by one of the wild ones next door. The traffic was so bad it took the police 2 hours to get here. The peace and quiet this evening is surreal. Life is back to normal.
