The last time Blue Ox serviced (basically rebuilt the tow bar) they recommended no lubricant of any kind, not even silicone. I had it done at the factory in Pender NE.

According to the instruction manual for our Avemta II tow bar, under the Maintenance section, it states that once a year, or if it is difficult to move the legs in and out, you should remove the cable ties holding the rubber boots on the legs, and slide the boots back. Wipe each inside leg clean, and lubricate with a light coat of multi-purpose grease. Then re-secure each boot in place with a 8" nylon cable tie.

I had one bar replaced under warranty by blue ox, because the disc where it rotated wore they said, i think they replaced their entire lineup.
I did lube mine time to time, and then learned that it was to tight from the factory to begin with and if memory serves me right we backed the main nut off a bit to loosen it up, and then everything was fine.
