These trucks can easily handle 2k over. Those numbers have a 100% saftey factor built into them any honest dealer will tell you that. It is only because of the excess lawyering and everybody wanting to sue everbody that they need to downgrade those ratings. No you cannot drive like your going to church in Ma's car you need to pay attention. I've had a CDL for 31 years well over 1 million miles no ticket no accident period. I am as safe as anyone on the road maybe moreso. My camper is only on the truck 5 maybe 10 percent of the time. If you feel you need the extra and can afford it then buy it, as I said 2k over no problem.

Right!
Best of luck to you, be careful for what you wish for And the dealer will tell you what you want to hear- they are there to sell vehicles. They read the same brouchures like every one else- I have yet to meet an automotive or structual engineer selling cars.

I can add to my above post about using a whole truck to haul a camper instead of a half a truck that will add some honest real world experience. Like I stated I have a 05' F150 that the wife drives to work. The 05' model would not haul pop-up camper without squatting to the bumper. Extra springs can be added to remedy this but you still have a half a truck.
I owned a 1979 F150 back in the mid 80's. I had two rear axle failures with this truck. The truck was equipped with "heavy duty" springs so it could pack a load without squatting but it still had the Ford 9" 1/2 ton axle.
The first time it failed I was pulling a heavy trailer(too heavy for a half ton)over the santiam pass in Oregon. I hit a small pothole and the left rear axle snapped which as you know is what the truck rides on in a half ton(not a floating axle like a 3/4 or one ton). When the axle snapped the tire turned left and went over the snow bank. We were left sliding down the road on three wheels. I was very lucky that I didn't end up upside down in the ditch. If I had had a tall load like a camper I am sure we would have not remained in a upright position.
The second failure occurred in my back pasture while I was pulling a goose-neck trailer with a small load of cattle. When pulling up over the canal bridge the pinion screwed right out of the front of the housing. This did not create a safety issue since I was not on the highway but once again showed me that a half ton is not up to the work of a one ton.
I have been there done that with the same attitude that BigBadF150SpringPacki has but I guarantee you when that big spring pack snaps a rear axle he will be the little chicken one - not us.

No whimps should be allowed on these forum.......I put more miles on my truck in any given month than these Nancys do during the whole ownership of their campers.....Here's a picture of my rig at a concert festival with some of my friends enjoying the festivities.

Come on Sally- your jacks are down
