We're thinking about taking the West Virginia Turnpike from I-64 to its northern end. I'm trying to figure out our tolls. We're towing a 36' fifth wheel (two axles) with a truck for a total of 4 axles. I see from the website that the toll for our size vehicle is $4. Is that $4 at each of the toll plazas we'll go through, or $4 for some other unit of measure?

I'd appreciate it if someone familiar with the road could help me out. Also--any reason we wouldn't want to be pulling it on that road in May? We're heading from Richmond, VA to Indiana.

Thanks.

If you go I-64 west from Richmond just stay on it to Charleston. Two toll plazas. I pay $2.50 at each one with my m'home pulling my Jeep. The last plaza is before you get to Charleston. Continue west on I-64 and when you get about even with the capitol building on your left, start working over to the two left lanes. They split off to the left and you'll then continue on to Huntington.

That'll take you right to Louisville and then into Indiana. All of it is good road and the speed limit on the toll portion is 60 mph. The biggest hill you'll pull is before you get to Beckley and is three lanes there w/bound. Your first toll plaza is west of Beckley about 6-7 miles. 2nd and last one is before you get to Charleston by about 15-20 miles.

From Richmond picking up I77 in Beckley headed north--first toll gate is around MM56 near Pax. Next is near MM 82 (approx) near Sharon/Cabin Creek. Single wheeled truck and 2 axle trailer is $1.50 at each booth. I believe a dually and trailer to be $2.00 IIRC. Should be no problems in May other than sporadic road repairs.

I'm going the other way in July. St. Louis to Richmond. Am I correct to assume that since there is a wb hill to pull east of Beckley, there is an equally graded down slope on the eb side. Not worried about the trip, just don't want any surprises. Any other info appreciated.

Yep, a long downgrade going east. There is a brake inspection stop for all big rigs at the top so you'll have warning. Stay in the right lane at abot 40-45 end no problems. There is then an up grade after the long down but nothing like the one going down.

I64 East bound Sandstone Mtn is like a 6% grade for 4 miles or so. Next hill is past Green Sulphur exit and then the next one is Afton Mtn just outside of Charlottesville. Never had any problems on any of them in the 14 yrs we've traveled them.

Thanks for all of the information. I don't worry too much about long grades on toll roads--we just stay in the truck lanes and take our time. I was more curious about cost (for planning purposes)and now I have that answer.

We're looking forward to the trip.

I don't know your width---but the toll gates are really tight on my 102" motorhome---after acquiring a 'battle scar' on mine--I used the far right hand lanes as much as possible.
