I hope some of you can give me some advice about what I have or what to do. I've recently relocated back to Kansas City, MO from the Gulf Coast of Florida. When I lived in KC before (moving to FL) I had a lot of respiratory issues...sinus, allergies. In the winter, when I would go outside it seemed like my sinuses would start draining and it felt like my lungs would fill with fluid so fast that I could not blow my nose or cough fast enough to clear either. And I'd cough so hard it felt like I was choking. In the summer...during the more humid months...it seemed like there was never enough "air in the air". And the same thing would happen. It would last a little while and then I'd be fine the rest of the day. I took Claritin daily, Flonase...and sometimes Benydryl...and carried Visine too because I'd get itchy eyes and little blisters on the rims. When we moved to Florida...the Clearwater area...I became perfectly healthy. All of my allergy medications just expired. Didn't need them. No itchy eyes, no sinus pain...no choking breathing problems. BUT...everytime I'd come back to KC to visit family...I'd have some allergies. And as soon as I got off the plane in Tampa they'd be gone in less than an hour!!!
Well...due to family issues (elderly parents) we've moved back to Kansas City. The winter has been rather long, cold and miserable. And my breathing problems have come back...now they are much worse. Today every time I went outside I started to gag and choke and had to come back in to clear my head and lungs. This doesn't happen everyday...but it has happened often enough that I never know what's going to happen and when. Now I'm back on the Claritin and the Flonase and it doesn't really help.
Has anyone else experienced this? What do you do about it? For that matter....what the heck IS it?? I'm about ready to move back further south!!
Thanks for listening.

I'm afraid I don't have answers for you. We lived in Indiana and our son is asthmatic with numerous allergies. When he graduated from Purdue, he moved to Florida. Been there 4 years and uses very little medication. Always gets sick when he flies back for visits.

Surely you wouldn't stop by your local hospital to find out how to dump your black tanks. Please see a medical doctor. You PROBABLY have allergies that can be treated but you need to know and GET that treatment.

I have been to many doctors over the years for this! That's how I got put on Claritin and Flonase. Usually what I hear is "well Missouri is pretty hard on people with allergies". I know several people who have been given lots of drugs...but no real help. That's why I was asking the Forum. A lot larger group of people with maybe some experiences to compare to.
thanks

you might be right about the smog part. Although I live about 35 miles north of the city...more country "lite"...the winds can sure bring the garbage this direction. I lived in a coastal area of the Gulf Coast and was always getting a dose of cleaner salt air. It was wonderful! The heat and humidity did not bother me there. I've tried talking my folks into moving back south...they're adamant..not happening. I'm telling them that for my own health I will probably have to be leaving again. We've thought of an area just north of Atlanta...winters are much better and cheaper than FL. But not sure if I'll be healthier there. It's pretty tough trying to figure out where the air quality is good enough for you to breathe! In some ways I feel like the canary in the mines!
Anyway...I'm really wondering if anyone else has these types of symptoms and what they are doing about it...or where they've been that was healthy for them.
thanks for the thought.

Could you move your elderly parents down to Florida?
I have allergies, too, and living here in the Northwest isn't the best. We'll probably end up going to Arizona, because DH loves the sunshine and I feel better in the desert.

I have asthma and allergies and the worse it got for me was when I lived in Iowa on the Mississippi River. I was on Theodur, a spinhaler, allergy meds and still felt like I couldn't breathe. Iowa and I would suspect Missouri too, is very humid and hence encourages molds of all kinds including tree molds which was the worst for me. As you can see, I am in Idaho now and now only on Flovent two puffs once a day and Nasonex in the spring and fall. For years I was on a toxic dose of Theodur but didn't know it till I went to a different doctor. Sounds like that's what you need to do. Maybe you need to do daily sinus washes too. I had to do those for years. Good luck, I hope you find some relief.

Find a physician that specializes in allergy care or an allergy clinic at a major teaching hospital. Your description of your symptoms and their progression since you last lived in KC make speciality help seem like the best idea if you are going to stay.
