Croft, I really enjoyed your blog about Mexico. I've visited some of the same places, but not driving or in an RV. Once away from the border areas I found the vast majority of Mexican folks among the friendliest I've met. Now then, I'm at the other end of the political spectrum from you it seems, but I'll bet we could even get over that, if a little Tequila Anejo was involved.

Made me want to get down there in a RV sometime soon!

I like that you keep track of everything while in Mexico Crandle.

I am doing the same thing so we would know what our averge per day cost was and whether we saved money or stayed around the same as fulltiming in the states like we do the rest of the year.

Like you, we entertain quite a bit, and try and go out and see the town or experience a new restaurant with each city we visit, so I'll be interested to see what our totals come out like.

We are still in Baja, and will be for one more month which will make our total closer to two months, instead of your 5 months. But since you averaged it out to each day, the totals will be the same thing.

I'll make sure to post mine when we return to the states for others to be able to compare. We tend to Boondock a bit more, as we have satyed many nights on the beautiful beaches along the coasts.

It sure is lovely down here, and thanks for giving us something to compare to.

Happy Camping

Pat

Hi. I enjoyed reading your accounting and your blog.
We're in Oliver BC and plan to spend some of next winter in Mexico. It appears you were able to get some ICBC credit on your rv/auto insurance while out of Canada. Please advise what the process is. thx

We have not applied for the ICBC refund as we are not home yet. As I understand the process, you have to prove that you not only had Mexican Insurance but also that you actually had the vehicle(s) in Mexico. This is hard to do because it is very hard to get receipts in Mexico's "Cash" economy. We saved all the evidence we could and will see what happens. If they accept our paperwork we will get a refund for five months pro-rated premiums on the motorhome, car and dolly. It will be a substantial amount!

PS: If you know Rick and Sandra at the Maple Leaf RV Park in Oliver, say "Hi" from Croft and Norma. We will see them in May.

Presenting a papertrail consisting of RV park receipts, toll road receipts, possibly gas receipts, with the particulars regarding the insurance you are proving was going unused while your vehicle was in Mexico, should net you a reimbursement from your insurer(s) had you not been able to curtail that coverage for the duration of your Mexican trip.

This seems to be the perferred way to deal with ICBC in this matter and has also been adopted by the private insurers who are now in B.C.'s auto insurance market. ICBC's use of a plate decal as indicative you are in compliance with having the required liability insurance would seem to make it impracticle to do it any other way.

We have had prompt service so far, on these requests for each Mexican trip by using photcopies of receipts and documents and a cover letter sent for each vehicle and to each company. You might include details to show you bought insurance for Mexico, but I doubt you will need to show it; they will not cover you there for one reason or another, so they should be happy to give you your refund. There is no legal requirement in Mexico to drive with insurance, but of course you'd be a fool not to.

I just received my cheque back from ICBC on friday and all I do is send them, through my insurance agent, the print out that immigration gives me when I turn in my paperwork upon returning to the border.
Its a long slim printout that has your entry and exit date along with all other info on it.It of course is all in spanish so I circle the 2 dates.
I've been using this method for several years now with no problem.Having said that,if you are on a 10 year permit, thats another story. My trailer is on it and I dont bother about it although last year I included the trailer in the cover letter and got money back for both.
Baja is again another story. The one year that I did go to Baja I saved receipts for campgrounds and that was enough to get the refund.

We also take our information into the insurance seller's office where they are very good at looking after it from there, even to the point of enquiring later on if we have gotten the refunds.
Regarding the Ten Year permits, which leave no "trail," as to border crossing dates, we still apply and get the refund. There is enough other proof to satisfy them.

A note about insurance rebates for Canadians driving in Mexico from B.C., I have just had a request to submit copies of my Mexican insurance in order for the provider of the privately controlled company providing the comprehensive portion of our regular insurance, to issue a rebate. ICBC is not asking, only the private company. So I'll have to eat my words on that, as stated above!

It is hard to establish a paper trail in Mexico where receipts are the exception and not the rule. Our insurance agent was willing to make as many copies as we needed so we sent copies of almost everything we had. They included road tolls, RV Parks (no plate numbers) grocery stores and tire repair. She seemed to think there would be no problem. We are patiently waiting.
