As I travel for business here in Mexico and must turn in expense reports and receipts to my accountant on a monthly basis, the only thing I could think of that I can't get a receipt for is from an informal business like maybe a taco stand. Gas, meals, repairs, Walmart, HEB, convenience stores, hardware stores, the list goes on. In most cases, it is a matter of asking. Also, if they can provide an official invoice (factura) it will include the 15% IVA. Most people don't ask for an invoice because they don't want to pay the IVA. JMHO.
I now add time to my cell phone at convenience stores instead of ATMs as I can ask for a factura and it is a deductible expense. You don't need to buy the phone cards anymore for your Telcel, MoviStar, etc. They key the information in at the register and you receive the phone credit immediately.
