We are current;y at Horsethief Campground just outside of Hill City. Just drove the Custer State Park and the Needles highway. $5 fee per person, but it is a very nice highway drive through 3 tunnels that are in the granite and quite awesome as is the drive. We saw antelope of the wildlife loop as well as deer, one lonely buffalo, many wild goats and 4 bighorn sheep. Horsethief is offering a 25% discount as out of season, we used Camp Club USA for 50% discount Saw Mount Rushmore, but at daylight, what an awesome sight it is.

We love Horse Thief Campground I recomend it to anyone. beautiful views of the Hills and centrally located in the BH`s. I take it you are getting a good signal from the WiFi?

A couple more places to visit on your trip to the Hills: Devils Tower on the west side near Sundance, WY and the museum at the School of Mines in Rapid City. This museum is noted for the displays of many fossils found in the region, really an educational experience and reasonably priced. Wind Cave NP is also well worth your time.

You didn't mention if you wanted to dry camp or not. If you want to dry camp, stay at Horsethief Lake--not the private RV park but the Nat. Forest campground. We always spend a few days there. It's a beautiful spot on a beautiful small lake in the middle of the forest with trees all around you.

I agree, we stayed there over night "Horsethief Lake" national forest campsite back in 2006, and will plan several nights there when we return. Yeah, no hookups, but very very scenic and Rushmore is even hikeable from there.

Was listed at #2 on the Travel Channels "World's Best Places to See by RV" a few years back.
