Think the Vortec is a 5.3, but nonetheless still not covered. My dad had a 94 suburban with the 5.7 and 250k miles. He loved that thing and was very proud of the number of miles it had. He would take a ribbing from his buddies because he was a little too proud of his mileage.
Ah, but I digress...
I really hate to stray off topic, but I believe there was also a Vortec 5.7 in the late 90s. It was slightly different from the earlier 5.7s.

I believe that the reason is that on certain vehicles there are campaigns already in place. Last month, I had all the intake bolts replaced on my 8.1L, along with the two fittings in the heads (pipe plugs).
That early morning smell of anti-freeze is now gone. However I still have an odd odor inside the cab when the heater is first turned on. This is after disassembling the dash and changing the cabin air filter ... twice. There are no signs of coolant leakage inside, but there is an odor, expecially on very cold mornings, from the heater outlets.
Dealer and I think that it is a seperate issue but we have not decided on the correction to make.

Ed Zactly. I should know, I replaced at least 3 gaskets on that same engine. 5.7/7.4 went to Vortec design in 96. The new trucks in 99 went to the 5.3/8.1 liter engine.
I currently have a 99 Denali with the 5.7 Vortec, the intake gasket has been replaced once, and it's leaking slightly again.

Thanks:
This sounds like the same thing happened to me with my Intrigue, was one of the best cars actually and this was the only real unexpected work done in 300k (kilometers).
I was not aware there was a class action on this, it was several hundred dollars as I recall and the mechanic told me he did dozens so this must have been a design defect.
