Renting, great idea. Then buy a low priced used RV to determine what tickles your fancy. It took us three(this time around) over eight years to get the "one"(for now anyhow).

Try "The Lakes" in Chowchilla, straight up on hiway 99, pass Fresno, Madera and there you are. Its a real nice new cg, free golf for each day/night you stay. Also can catch a fish if you've a mind to. Another spot you might want to check out is Moss Landing, just below Watsonville/Monterey. If no toad, things can be reached by walking. Spots can be checked out on the internet. Enjoy your trip.

If the option is there, absolutely rent first unless you just have money burning a hole in your pocket. We rented for 5 years before buying and think we bought exactly the right size, length etc. Yea, we spent more than we should have but believe if we take care of it we won't need to do it again. Plus, you buy retail and then sell wholesale, only to buy retail again. Renting can be a bit expensive but for us it was perfect. You know, things like "where are the cup holders for DW and myself/" Silly stuff until you don't have it in the right place. The considerations are many and you will want to experience it so when you are looking you will know what is right for you guys. We were interested in how much counter space, usable counter space there was. I wanted a DP for ride, power and other guy things. Belly storage was another big deal.
Rent.....Its a little expensive but so helpful..

Thanks to everyone for all of their great feedback! My wife and I are really excited. We just got back from the new CG here in Bakersfield. We popped into the restaurant, walked by the pool area and say hi to a few folks.
We are going to take everyone's advice and RENT an RV for our very first trip. We are going to take a 3 day excursion in mid April. Not sure of our destination yet, but some of your suggestions will be noted.

Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles is very nice. Great staff there and pull throughs. We used to live in Coarsegold (Fresno area) and that was our 1st trip out. Easy drive to get to and nice to get out on some day trips to Morro Bay see the ocean, go to Cambria, etc.
Have fun!

Here's one more suggestion. Join one or both of the following. Lots of resources from insurance and financing to camping locations and products/services. Too much stuff to list here.

My wife and I are in our late 40's and took up RV'ing about 8 years ago.....
Renting is a great idea, however understand that most rental units are not a good representation of the "real" experience. It does give you a good feel but when we rented from Cruise America the unit we got was all over the road and pretty beat up.
When we where new we started with a B class, a year later we moved to a super C and a year after that I got my first diesel class A. 2 years later we moved up to our Vectra. My advice is stretch if you can because if you really like it there is nothing like driving a class A diesel vs a class C or B.
Do a lot of looking and shopping before you decide on what coach is right for you and what type of trips you will be taking....short weekends, one week vacations or are you planning on spending a month or more in the coach. Think, think, think before you spend.
