We wonder if anyone has been treasure seeking(gold, diamonds, stones, etc) with their kids for a vacation or part of their trip? Was it something the kids enjoyed? We have two teens and have considered it but want some advice.

While we haven't looked for treasure, we have geocached, which is less profitable but still a lot of fun.

we take a medal detector with us when we go camping but you cant just do it anyplace you go there's laws against it in many places unless you go to places that cater to it and you pay them for the privilege ,asking permission depending where you go if on privet property, out west would probably would be your best place to try it, with a medal detector beaches along the ocean are a good places to go.i would think panning for gold in streams out west would be the best place for that unless there privetly owned or theres mineing claims on the land.the internet might be a good place to search for places to go.

I do metal detecting..........you do have to ask permission for any privately owned property, and some campgrounds and some state/US parks won't let you either.....beaches are a good place.
I've gone to the crystal mine places in Arkansas and had a blast.........next trip I'm not only going to the crystal mines, but the "diamond field" in Arkansas.
If you watch the Travel Channel, they have a show about all the places you can "pay and mine" all over the USA and some free sites too.
Have a blast!! (and if you get into metal detecting, be sure to leave the place you are searching like you found it, if you dig, replace the soil and the grass)

We live about 30 minutes from the western edge of the Motherlode area of California. We keep a gold pan in the 5er for sniping in streams up in the Sierra.

DW and I mined for "Herkimer Diamonds" (a very pure form of quartz crystal) in a CG in Upstate NY called Crystal Grove in the Village of St. Johnsville.
We use this experience as our "why RV travel is better than hotels" story. I am usually the only driver, and I was tired last yr as we were going west past Albany on the NY Thruway. We found Crystal Grove on the Trailer Life CD Rom Directory on the Laptop and stayed there on a whim. They had just opened for the season and have a couple of open-pit mines on their property. They rent tools at the office and will make anything you find into a necklace for free. That's not something you would stumble into if you were going to hotels.
I have no affiliation with the CG other than staying there for one night and mining there for one morning. i would go back there in a heartbeat, though

We have a metal detector and about all we ever find is pop-tops, old keys, tent stakes. The kids have fun with it. We plan to go to the diamond fields in Arkansas this year. Looking to subsidize college!

We tried letter boxing last year & it was fun. You have to follow clues to find where the boxes are hidden. My daughter liked playing detective, & you get to see some beautiful places you might have missed.
