Maybe because even if they gave you a feel-good measurment ( ie 1/4" thick...) YOU still would not believe it. So, what good, for someone like you, would it be if they DID give the plate sizes.... NOTHING.

again, the behavior is indicative. Note how things get personal rather than address the issues. I do not think speculation about what others will do or comments about their attributes are in line with the forum rules nor do such comments contribute to anyone's ability to learn and make good decisions.

As for the batteries being taken out of the RV for storage - The first thing to do is, I think, to get away from the trickle charge idea. Think instead _battery maintainer_ - these days it is not much trouble to get a device like the BatteryMinder that will keep the charge topped off intelligently plus provide sulfation inhibition.

As for the batteries as a bank or individual - just make sure that you use equipment for the necessary voltage with a sufficient current rating either way. I'd think that maintaining individual batteries separately might be a slightly better situation but if you are using 6v batteries in your bank, it will be easier to connect them as a 12v bank for storage because 12v equipment is easier to find and less expensive.

See Basic battery guidelines and Understanding batteries, start with these links for more ideas and the background behind them.

I have noticed much less info printed on batteries these days. At one point the number of plates were printed on the batteries I remember but I am sure it was used to confuse by the marketing departments.

It is true that your truly deep cycle batteries can have plates 1/4" thick and last 20 years. It is also true they handle them with lift systems or they are 1.5 volt batteries.

The reason the 2-6v vs 2-12v threads keep popping up it seems to me has to do with the geek vs function factor when the function factor is undefined by science.

Being a guy early on I decided some guys preferred thin girl friends and others preferred thick, some preferred short and others preferred tall, some perferred one color of hair over another. Over time I decided the combo of features one guy preferred over another had nothing to do with my taste or needs so I quit asking the opinion of others on the subject of what type of woman makes the best wife since I was going to be that had to live with my selection.

Would I rather have a 72 lb. Firefly Group 31 AGM battery instead of a 72 lb. Lifeline Group 31 AGM battery .... probably, if what Firefly claims turns out to be real.

Having worked in the electric utility business for a few years and driven around in submarines, I will wait until the Firefly has some operational history before considering them. Maybe by the time my Lifelines wear out the Fireflies will have that history. And maybe not.

And when driving around in submarines, do you use Marine batteries or Golf Cart batteries?

perhaps this is because all of that information means very little in regards to modern batteries or is not pertinent to how they are made or constructed.

i.e. there just isn't that much of a difference between batteries available for RV or solar service as you might think from the discussions.

Before we put this to bed, I'd like to add that in addition to plate thicness, surface area can also be manipulated control certain performance characteristics. This by surface texture and/or porosity. Other substances are added to the lead, as well.
