Okay now, I'm going to suggest something radical! I'm sure you'll think this impossible, but actually it can be done. Teach the little dog to "stay."
A solid stay is a wonderful thing. Your dog can "stay!" by your camp chair, with a leash looped over your chair arm (for safety and rules compliance) and be RIGHT in the middle of everything without being a nuisance or endangered.
A good solid stay will act as an "off" switch for your friendly little dog. He'll realize that he isn't going anywhere, and learn to relax and not be a pest to others. It is an incredible tool for managing the hyper canine.
And it really isn't all that hard to teach, if you want to do it. Patience and persistence are required, but not a lot of skill.

DavesWife: thank you We think he's kinda cute too. He's a good boy and very sweet. I acutally did win a local photo contest with this pic.
Susan: stay works great for him indoors or when no new people are around, but when other dogs come around or new people he just can't help himself and no amount of "stay" commands work for him in that kind of situation. Trust me, over the past 6 years we've had him we've worked extensively on this. Not every dog responds every time to every command, and every dog is different. He is very obedient in general and at home, but at camp it's a whole other story with so many other dogs, critters, new people all the time, etc...
The leash loop thing is what he gets himself tangled up in, he goes in out and around the chair legs and no one can relax. Being in the pen is really the best thing for him in our particular situation. He's not in there 24/7, he gets regular walks and is free to roam when inside our camper. But when we're all outside, say around the fire or whatever, the pen is the best place for him and he's very close to the action and coming and going areas so he doesn't really seem to feel isolated. Trust me, he is well loved and adored and has tons of company visiting him at his pen at all times. Some of our neighbors know his name but don't know ours!

We always carry four ex-pens that are 48in. tall and 16 ft. long and when connected together create a fenced area about the size of our main awning.
We prefer rural or state park campgrounds for the size and privacy of the sites and no one has tried to keep us from erecting our safety barrier which keeps our FurKids safe from wandering kids or stray animals. We'd probably have the ex-pen fence if we didn't have pets just for the added privacy.
The pens set up fairly quickly and easily and our pups like being free to go in and out of our rv and be with us without leash or other restraint. Of course, our pups would never be outside unless we are with them. Our "fence" makes our outdoor time at our site very relaxed and safe.

I've been on the road showing my dogs for over 6 years and never came across a CG that didn't allow the ex-pens. But a make a 'very' big effort to errect them along side the MH in a neat and organized way so that my site looks nice. I also cover the side of the ex-pen that faces the road side, and/or in a tightly parked site I cover the side facing my camping neighbor.
I am hitting the road full time this month and I wouldn't dream of leaving home without them.
The dogs have so much a better time camping where they can just kick back and relax without being tethered.

We use this when we travel:
Pet containment.
Works well for our Yorkie. We usually use all 6 panels, but sometimes just 4. It folds flat accordian style for storage.

Here's what I do - it's not perfect but it works for me.
Molly (my dog) has a metal kennel for inside ... I just take it outside when I want her out but contained (when I'm grilling or have a open fire going) I also used that system when I'm setting up the 5er - she's safe and out of the way and isn't in the truck whinning to get out and stressing me out. I was going to get an Ex Pen but for now I don't want to haul it around. I may change my mind later.

We just had our first weekend with ex-pens (3 + panels for under camper). It was WONDERFUL!!! We have 2 dogs and 1 puppy so it was great not having ropes everywhere. The dogs were comfortable and it also gave us a bit more room to leash them for walks. My husband was sceptical but he's a convert now. Of course we didn't leave them outside without one of us being there.
