I'm looking to get a 5500 Onan generator installed in my 08' Montana. Except for the price difference. What are the advantages and Disadvantages of gas vs propane. Thank You Steve

A lot depends on the propane storage capacity. For 20/30 pound cylinders forget it. For the average 14 gallon tank figure weekends are OK even with the genset running all the time. Over that it's break down the site and drive to find a propane dealer.
Larger tanks of course extend your stay.
If you normally camp with hookups and will see very limited use of the genset then propane is what our folks get. Less problems in storage. For a lot of usage such as boondocking/dry camping our folks go with gasoline as it's easier to get without moving and locating.

If you can get a gasoline or diesel fuel tank factory installed in your new Montana, I'd opt for the gas or diesel genset. We have an Onan 6500 Marquis Gold propane genset in our 5'er and we love it but it is not as fuel efficient as a gas genset. A 30lb propane bottle will last us about 12 hours with the generator running at approx 50% load.

Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

A couple of 5 gallon gas cans can be used to refuel the gas generator. Not so simple with an LP generator.

I'd go with propane.

Never worry about a gummed up carburetor.

Generator will last longer.

Little or no smell from the exhaust.

Same fuel as your furnace/water heater/stove.

Not storage hassles

Just get larger tanks installed on the front side as a gallon of propane doesnt have as much energy as does a gallon of gas so you will be using about 25% more.

Propane is cheaper than gas, even though you use a little more of it.

If you have a trailer you already have propane tanks, You would have to add a gas tank though, Gas is a hazardous material so, why add more.

Generators use a lot of propane though

If you have a motor home..Well, I carry 27 gallons of propane (max) and 70 gas, of which about 50 is shared between the main engine and the Onan. a gallon of gas is more power than a gallon of propane. So the math gets real easy

I very rarely use my generator.it's just for power outages or the even rarer boondocking. So I elected to go with propane cause there is no residual fuel clogging the jets issues.Long layoffs don't bother it.

Getting propane tanks refilled is no problem, heck most convience stores around here even have them for exchange for $18.
