We are going to be in Savannah in May. Having never been to GA, we have been relying on forums to pick where we want to stay. I have seen both of these state parks recommended several times. Do you prefer one over the other? Right now both have space available according to the online reservations system. Do I need to make reservations soon or is there usually space if I wait a few weeks? I like to have some flexibility in the schedule, but I also get nervous when I don't know where I'm staying.

Thanks for your input.

I have never camped at Ft. McAllister but I did camp at Skidaway Island and loved it. You probably would not be disappointed with either. GA has great State Parks. I am sure the sand fleas will be at both if they are in season. When I went in November they were absent. See which fits your needs better as far as proximity to Savannah and go with it. If you need 50 amps, I know that many of the Skidaway sites are equipped with 50 amps, especially the loop closest to the entrance.

Remember that GA state parks accept reservations but are not site specific. They will try to make sure a site is available for your size rig, but it's first-come, first-serve for site selection. If there are size differences, the larger size rigs will have one color for their site reservation and smaller rigs will have another color. The available sites will be tagged the same color.

We've been to both and like Skidaway Island much better. We have always called the park direct and made reservations. Hope you enjoy your visit.

Skidaway is closer to Savannah. Fort McAllister is nice and we loved sightseeing the fort, but we found Skidaway to be more convenient.

Skidaway is our weekend getaway place. 10-15 minutes from downtown Savannah. I have yet to have a bad stay at any of the GA state parks.

Just stayed at Ft. McAlister last month. Very large pull thu sites. Only on bath house/restroom open as they are making major renovation to the other. Liked the park very much and would (will) return again.
Fort was interesting. Great Publix market on the way in to the park to stock up if needed.

We really liked Skidway. It has large sites with a lot of open space. If you have a big rig just watch as you pull into the campground for overhead limbs. We had to set up in the rain and at night but it was well worth it. We rode over to Ft McAllster and for our taste Skidway was much better.

Thank you for your opinions. It sounds like Skidaway will fit our needs best. It sounds like Ft. McAllister could be a day trip. We are getting excited. We picked a bad year to make a cross country trip, but who knows what next year will bring.
