Anyone stay here? I've heard it's nice. From what I can tell there is only one rv park. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Toni

I am an old veteran of Cedar Key and defend it regularly. My name has been carved into the Cedar paneling at the Island Hotel for 30 years. I would call Ft. Wilderness nice. I would not call Cedar Key nice. Great place, lots of atmosphere, a little shabby and run down, drinking town with a fishing problem, sprinkled with lots of character (and characters) but not nice. There are no sandy beaches on the island. Only a few pools, mostly private. Some good seafood restaurants with fresh local clams and fish. Sunset Isle Motel-RV is of an older design, few, if any, concrete pads, smaller spaces, backs up on a small bay with great sunsets, fish jumping, birds hunting, etc. We love it it but some denigrate the place. I highly recommend going there with an open mind before its paved over and blighted with condos. Excellent fishing if you have a boat and there are lots of private, sandy islands all around.

We day trip out to Cedar Key. Does have lots of atmosphere and good seafood.
We stayed at the Encore Park in Redding, FL. Probably about a 50-60 mile trip out to Cedar Key if I remember correctly. Interesting.

We spend 6 months in Crystal River and make at least one trip per winter to Cedar Key.

Sunset Isle is currently selling RV lots although they still rent until all are sold.

Lots off the water start at $76,000, waterfront from $140,000.

And, I'm still searching for that good seafood.

I would not drive from Crystal River to Cedar Key for seafood. I think its called hauling coals to Newcastle?

Cedar Key is a great destination.

You don't have to stay there however. There are lots of campgrounds within 20 miles of the place. The closer you stay the more you will pay.

The museum on Cedar Key is a must see, take a look at the photos on my blog of Cedar Key.

You will have to scroll down to that particular blog to find it.

Cedar Key is a great day trip. Be sure to go to the State Museum on the North Side of the island. Camping opportunities are one of the reasons to make it a day trip.

I did talk to two gentlemen at the Ft Myers RV show that are developing an ownership campground East of Cedar Key that should be a luxury type resort but I do not know how far along it is. Natures Coast by the Florida Barge Canal is the nicest close campground I know of.

I stayed at sunset isle campground about 3 years ago, and the facility was in shambles, in my opinion. Cedar Key is worth at least one visit. I probably will not return.

Definitely worth a day trip if nothing else. We drove out there from Manatee Springs SP for a brief look and dinner. Would love to go back with some more time for exploration. Agree with the earlier poster. It is not "nice". But it is quaint and charming with great seafood.
