I would like any and all fellow rv'ers to make a suggestion as to the best route from NC to AK. Not necessarily the shortest or fastest. I do plan to see Mt Rushmore and the great redwoods on the way to or from. We are traveling in the May, June,& July time frame. Also what are the cell phone usage problems, and is a CB a good investment for this trip as well.

CB is great when traveling with another rig, otherwise I don't use mine. Cell should work from most towns and a lot of the area between, depending on your server of course.

Use a mapping program, or even paper maps, mark your waypoints/attractions & see what the most direct routes are from one to another then start tweaking the route if you don't like the most obvious one.
Out west it is not like you have a whole lots of alternates to choose from.

I would leave the redwoods for another and use that time in Alaska. You will have to drive many miles out of the way to find redwoods.

There are two routes (not counting ferry), Alcan and Cassier. IMO Cassier is by far the prettiest. If you go that way, see bears in Hyder!

After Mt Rushmore enter Canada via Sweetgrass, MT to Dawson Creek on to Alaska. As another has mentioned, save the Redwoods for another time. You will really be happy you did when you reach Alaska. I have make that trip five times. The first was in March 1973 and 2007 being the last. We left 1 June spent the summer in Alaska and arrived in Washington State 13 September. Enjoy the trip. We may even drive it again in a couple years.

Your going to have an awesome journey, with lots of distance to cover.
ALASKA : Take the Cassiar Highway one way and the Alcan on your return.
Must sees' in AK Hyder; Glacier; Nat Park; Denali; Homer; Katmai ( but expensive)and Chicken. Deviate up the Dempster just past Dawson City and see Rushmore on your way back as you just may run into the Bikers rally at Sturgess. And Glacier National Park Montana is open and not that far from Rushmore.
Enjoy :::

Buy a copy of the Milepost Magazine at better bookstores. It's an invaluable source of information for traveling to AK
We took a month just getting to Alaska. We visited the Black hills, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons and Glacier NP before crossing into Canada.

DH: "Lucky I guess, it sure beats the alternative"
