Boy that is a tall request.
Maine has some of the nicest rough coast line in the country, not only that, the mountains are excellent.
If we were closer and the time, we would spend a lot of time in Maine just looking. A few days here a few there.

Excellent part of north america.

Acadia NP, without question.
If you're into outdoor gear, stop at LL Bean's HQ store in Freeport.
Boothbay area is neat, and the day (boat) trip out to Monhegan Island can be interesting.

All the towns along US 1, especially Camden. you may remeber it from the movies. Bar Harbor/Arcadia National park is great. ANP has campsites w/o hookups but has a 35" ft limit like most parks. From Bar harbor you can ferry to Nova Scotia.

I would like to expand on

Acadia National Park
Mount Desert Island, Maine

There are 45 miles of carriage roads open to bikers and walkers.
horseback riding on some of these trails
Scooter rentals to enjoy the park.
Drive, bicycle, or hike up Cadillac Mountain for unbelievable views of Bar Harbor
Kayaking rentals with guided tours.
There is a fast ferry over to Nova Scotia.
Ride on the 4 masted schooner out of Bar Harbor.
Horseback riding
Lobster
Beach
27 mile road around Acadia National Park

Some campgrounds suggestions are (in no order)
Mount Desert Narrows Campground 866.917.4300 EXT 222 -There is also Narrows Too which is just off island.

Bar Harbor KOA (888) 562-5605 There is the Ocean and Woodlands. They are two separate locations. We have stayed in the Ocean. Fantastic. We have never stayed in a more friendly campground. IMHO, do not reserve online.

Bar Harbor Campground 207 288-5185 No reservations Accepted

We are staying at Narrows this summer from July 18 to July 26 with a very diverse group. PM if you would like to join us for all or part of the time and I will PM you more information.

I hope this helps.
Paul

If your the adventerous physical type, WW rafting on the Dead River. Camp in Millinocket, take a shuttle for a canoe trip down the Penobscot (moose), better yet do a canoe trip down the Allagash (more moose and great fishing) if you don't mind the drive. Climb and hike the knife edge on Katahdin. Read the North Maine Woods.
On the mellower side I liked Campabello, camp at Cobscook SP (get your lobsters from the wharf in North Cutler) or on the island at the provincial park (electric). The ferry from Campabello to Ca. is very nice, you drive over the beach to get on the ferry and shuttle from island to island. There are even a couple campgrounds on a couple of the islands if you plan it right. Whales and such can be seen from the lighthouse park.
Another vote for Acadia but it's kind of crowded for me during the summer months. The park at Winter Harbour was very nice across the bay.

Acadia NP if you don't go anywhere else! When visiting Acadia, also visit Bar Harbor and some of the other smaller towns on MDI such as Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Bernard (for Thurstons Lobster Pound).

Also stop for a while in Camden and Rockland (The Lighthouse Museum). You can't really go too wrong anywhere in Maine. If it wasn't for the winters there and our five grandsons here we wpould move there.

All of that and... The Maine Lobster Festival in Rockport, usually the first week in August. Also, take a lobster boat ride out of Camden harbor.
