How is that road during the Summer and Fall ? Passable with a 4WD Pickup ? I think it is designated CR-129.
Thx,

Maybe there is more than one "Steamboat Lake" but the one I know of (about 40 miles north of Steamboat Springs) has only one road heading NORTH from there and that is NFS 550 (believe it is) but heading NORTH won't get you anywhere near I-70 because that's a hundred miles SOUTH from there. I-80 is about 75 miles NORTH of there though. US 550 does not require 4 wheel drive with the possible exception of during snow fall season or POSSIBLY during thaw season but it's mostly flat and fairly well graveled.
Believe Allen is referring to WY 70, not I-70. While I have not done the whole thing, I did go north from the campground to the WY border, 70 was not too far further, while exploring one day. Gets down on the Little Snake River as I recall. The dirt/gravel road was just fine for my FWD Hyundai Accent, so doubt you'll have any problems. There are some great dirt roads in that whole area that will get you to some gorgeous spots. Me and one of my dogs just took off from Utah one day and ended up in this area. Spent 4-5 days. Did not regret it and will go back. The Steamboat Lake CG is pretty nice. Couple of other small CGs in the area as well. This was a couple of years ago.
NOW that makes sense...sorry. I camp in several disbursed areas along 550 between Hawns Peak and Hog Park in Wyoming. Haven't taken the Rockwood there yet but many times in my 25 foot Coachmen. I wouldn't hesitate a minutes to make the trip with the Rockwood either.
Thx,Summutt -
As you pointed out, I was referring to WY 70 when I wrote Rt-70.
Steamboat Lake is one of Colorado's nicest State Parks. Been some years since I was there, and I think I'll go up this summer and poke around the back roads. With my GPS it won't matter so much what the FR and CR signs say, even though my maps do show it is CR-129 that winds up to the WY border and then west to WY-70 near Slater, WY.
Now that I look at FR 550 on my maps, I see it does run up to WY 70 approx 12 miles west of Riverside and WY 230. Maybe there is a loop I can take from Hahns Peak up FR 550, west on WY 70, & then back down CR 129 ? Anybody out there know for sure ?
129 is the correct route. NF550 and 129 diverge just above Columbine and 129 intercepts 70 just east of Slater. Mighty pretty country and is definitely some of the roads less traveled.
