Do you buy the weight distribution hitch for tongue weight? or for trailer weight?
My trailer has a 490# TW and a gross of 6500# my dealer told me I didn't need anymore than the 550# model but according to the web site it is only good for a gross of 5500# http://www.dsphitches.com/index.php?modu........op=view_page&PAGE_id=10&MMN_position=1:1
should I be buying the bigger one?

Since ours lists both on the hitch rating, I would assume both.

Ditto Mockturtle's reply. Check out e-trailer.com web site. They say you gotta MEET both Hitch and TT weight for proper weight distribution op. Happy Trails!!

Your trailer, once it's loaded and going camping, should have a tongue weight of at least 10% of the total trailer weight. so if you max gross weight is 6500, I would get one size higher and have 750 lb bars. I always go one size higher on the bars. I just like the way the rig handles and rides that way.

Your dealer is an idiot. Brian is headed right. I use 13% of fully loaded weight as a target. If you have not ACTUALLY WEIGHED your FULLY LOADED TT, then use 13% of the GVWR for the minimum bar size. If bars are big enough, the tow weight will be fine.
