We are still lagging behind, but lovin' all the info. Thanks. We are in Whitehorse at Hi Country for 3 nights, then on to Kluane RV and then up to Tok. Once in Tok, we will try to make reservations for our actual Alaska portion of our trip. We will include: Fairbanks, Denali, somewhere near Anchorage (but not in), then down to the Kenai Pen- Cooper Landing, Kenai, Homer, Seward, and then to Valdez before heading to Haines to catch the SB ferry. I've been reading all your posts about the cg's, but any added info for the areas I'm visiting will be greatly appreciated. We are a class a 38' w/toad.
By the way, the cg looks full or close to. Be safe, Kathy

Kathy, your itinerary sounds almost identical to ours except we are doing the Dawson City/TOW instead of going straight to Tok. We are scheduled to board the marine highway at Haines on Aug 15 and will spend time at stop offs (Juneau, Sitka, Ketchican, and then off at Prince Rupert.
We are traveling in our Green Simba with a red Toyota pickup for toad. If you happen to see us, give a wave or come over and introduce your selves. Would love to say howdy.

We came through Whitehorse several weeks ago. That's the only place that had full or nearly full campgrounds (at least if you stop before 4:00 pm). After staying one night in a gravel parking lot RV park for $35 in Whitehorse, we spent the next night (and only time in 3 years) at Wally's. At least that area was paved.
In Alaska, there has been lot's of room although we called ahead to Fairbanks and Anchorage in the early afternoon to lock up sites for that evening.
Oh yes, there was one exception to plenty of space available-----that was the public campgrounds around Copper Creek and the Russian River on the Kenai were full and overfulling due to the salmon run.

Hi! Back "on-line"! Anyone else on the forum at Denali NP? We're here 'til Mon AM - Riley Creek site 5! Lucked out yesterday when we got in - clear day - had stayed at Carlo Creek CG about 12 mi S of the Park entrance the night before - GREAT CG for those with small rigs (it is tight inside!) - likely the nicest park we've stopped at in a while!!! Fantastic view of Denali from the road, then took the afternoon bus to Eielson Visitor's Center (ride the shuttle with John Allen as the driver - not the expensive "tour" bus - GREAT time!) - saw great views of Denali, grizzlies, caribou, hare. Rain today - good rest-up day! ST

We're finally on the way. Day two today in Dawson Creek, enjoying the museums and the lake at Rotary Park. Up in the morning heading towards Fairbanks! See ya soon.

We are well & truly homeward bound. All roads lead south & east for us. Today we tried to get into a Provincial Park near Smithers, BC. Absolutely full. Onward we went & have stumbled on a rare gem of a private BC CG.
We are in Shady Rest RV Park, Houstin, BC. Sounds like a retirement home or a cemetary but it is a clean CG with good site separation & mature trees for shade. WIFI seems to work well CG wide, a very rare treat indeed, & there is no extra charge for it.
From here, it is S to Jasper then Calgary for a few days of Stampede.

All of you up or already returning I have a couple of questions. Headed up, in the Banff area now, and was planning the "Top of the World" Highway route. Should I or bypass going straight to Tok from Whitehorse? Wanted to take as many varied routes as possible, however am a little concerned about the road description/condition especially from Dawson City to Tok. Understand 100+ miles is gravel? Am running a 40ft pusher and read about having to be particularly careful especially if road happens to be wet or even if dry, about soft shoulders. Have any of you gone that route? Looking for your comments and suggestions. Thank you

I have two words for you:
HOLY CRAP!!!
We just finished that route about 2 hours ago (Dawson to Chicken). 100 miles? Maybe! There are "gravel" areas of probably more than the chip seal (what they use for asphalt up here), but really not a problem. A little dusty, a few pot holes.....but not real bad. HOWEVER, once you get to the U.S. border....the gravel turns into a dirt road and it hasn't been graded in quite a while. Fortunately, it was dry today (one of the very few days without rain in the past two months -- so no mud) but it was EXTREMELY DUSTY! The dirt road in places becomes very narrow with probably 80 degree drop offs on one side. And yes there are signs for "soft solders"; however, even when I pulled over as far as I could to let others go by, I never had any problem at all.
When we pulled into Chicken, our maroon red toad was tan. It had at least 1/4" of dust on it. The back of the motorhome was completely covered, including my radiator. I had to hook up the air hose and blow off the engine of the toad and the MH's radiator. I'm very surprised we didn't overheat. I'm kinda worried about my air filter, but there's not much I can do about it here.
Would I do it again.....hell no! Do I recommend you do it...well, probably not. Dawson City was Great and we really enjoyed it, but if I had known what this side of the TOW was going to be like, we probably would have retraced out steps back to Whitehorse.
If you don't mind taking 7 hours for a 110 mile trip, extremely dusty roads, and other drivers (mainly cars) who don't slow down to pass (trowing rocks and gravel everywhere - we got a chip out of our windshield from one idiot today)...then go for it. You won't have any problems with getting your rig over the mountains if you just go very slow and watch out for others.

We did the TOW 24 May, enjoyed every particle of dust! You are coming to see Alaska, right? Do it. No hill for a stepper!!
Dawson City is interesting as well. We didn't have any trouble, just take it easy.
