mybrandsam...we are a little ahead of you. We left St. Augustine on June 22 and made it to Dawson Creek last night. We turned left at Sioux Falls and came up thru Calgary via Mt Rushmore and Montana so we could go to the Stampede. The Stampede runs thru the 13th and is a must see. Calgary West Camprgound is okay and has a shuttle to the Stampede. If you can, take the Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper then take 40 from Hinton, AB to Grande Prairie, just beautiful drives. We stayed at the KOA in Hinton(JAsper East) very nice. See You in Alaska.
Hi again! found wifi again! Spent the weekend of the 4th at Sheep Creek off the Parks Highway -free camping and fishing for kings - None for me but had fun anyway. Hatcher Pass was rough even in our 'B", but found a great spot to boondock. Do Not take anything bigger over Hatcher Pass!!! We opted Not to drive the Denali Highway, too. In anchorage area now-does the sun ever shine around here??? ST

Hi 'rock,
Glad to see you're having a good time! Yeah Hatcher Pass can be a bit on the rugged side. But the views are worth it if you can get to them. Denali Hwy is also a good scenic drive if you have a toad or you aren't bringing your "house" with you.
As for the rain, well we spent a very nice 4th of July at Denali Park and I have a co-worker that just came back from Valdez with the same great weather. It's realy hit or miss in Alaska - you never really know what you're gonna get weather-wise until it happens. Kinda makes RVing a challenge...you have to be ready for just about anything! LOL!

Hi AK -T! Doing well in Eagle River SP - only 1/10 full. Glad you had a good 4th - would recommend Sheep creek to all for free dry camping -plenty of space! st

FMOS, I would been real leery of the Denali Hwy in an RV. It isn't state maintained anymore except for one or two gradings and it's not in the best of shape. If you have a toad it would be best to take a test drive before you commit your "house" to it. I haven't drove it for a few years for that very reason but I don't hear to many folks singing it's praises! Some nice country to be seen, no question, but the road to see it is not so pretty!
I just drove it last week. It was no problem at all. Pulled my 28' fully loaded wth two quads and didn't have a bit of a problem. Make sure to stop at Gracious House for teh blackberry pie and huckleberry ice cream.

Hi Kathy, it was great meeting you even for the short few minutes. Too bad you caught right at dinner time and a mouth full of salad.
We too spent the 4th at Pioneer Park...stayed at Rivers Edge and met up with a couple that we have been leap frogging since Fort Nelson. He is a retired Master Chief and knows the navy base where I retired from, so we have some pretty good chats. They are full timers and just have loads of great info.
We left Fairbanks on the 7th and ventured down to Denali, did the tour but of course the weather didn't agree and for most of the tour, we could only see the base of the mountains....Not Denali itself. Oh well, maybe next time. We did see a wolf trotting along like we weren't even there.
Took off this morning and stopped to see the dog sled display and then on down to Anchorage. We're currently at the Golden Nugget over by the long term people (now I see where "trailer trash" comes from. Tomorrow we will request a site change to the other side. We will be here for at least a week as we try to get a few things fixed on the Simba (light and camera replacement) and then on down to Seward/Homer area.
If you stay here at the GN, let me know and maybe the four of us can sit down to a glass of wine or something and chat a little longer than the last time. Sandie is a great talker (I take a backseat to that talent) and I'm sure we'll have a good time.
On the 6th, diesel fuel at Sam's Club in Fairbanks was 4.99, on the 7th it was 5.11... Sure glad we filled up on the 3rd. Here in Anchorage, the cheapest I could find is 5.09. I'll look some more tomorrow.
see ya

Hi all and Ron,
We are in the 30% club, as we did see Denali. All I can say is awesome. We are currently in Cooper Landing, heading to Homer. We don't have any reservations down there, hope to land a spot on the spit.
Ron, we are traveling about the same route and timetable. We will be in Homer Friday and Saturday (7/11,12) then on to Seward for Sun and Mon. Will our paths cross? Love it sit and chat a spell. We will be in Palmer on Tues 7/15, not far from Anchorage. Stay in touch, and good luck with yor repairs. Kathy

Hi Kathy... nope, unfortunately, we will be staying here in Anchorage until at least the 15th (depends on how quickly we can get the repair parts we need) and then on down to Homer and Seward. Sandie is an avid quilter and there are several quilt stores in Palmer, so I suspect that one of these days (in the next week) we will be spending the day there, but I'm sure it won't be the 15th.
When will you be heading for Valdez or the Marine Hwy? Maybe we can get together there. We are also huge fans of the Olympics and plan on seeing opening day ceremonies on TV in Valdez on Aug 8th....then down to Haines for the Mar Hwy on the 15th. We will be spending about a week each in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchican before departing at St. Rupert on the 30th.
So glad you got to see "The Great One". This is our 2nd try and still got stumped!! We stopped at each place that is advertised to view Denali, and still didn't see it. I think in the month and a half that we have been on this trip, we have only seen four or five days that it didn't rain. I understand, however, that on a clear day, you can see Denali from the University here in Anchorage...so we'll keep a look out for it.
