Kathy. Thanks for your reply. I failed to mention that we aren't leaving until June 2009. We have a plan outlined for a 2 month trip and then we will head east and go all around the U.S. returning home in April 2010. Our friends retire next year so this will be their first extended trip. My wife and I have been to Alaska several times on business so some of this trip is for our friends. However, I am doing as much research as possible looking for all of the sites along the way. I have a detailed intinerary for the trip from Washington to Fairbanks that I would be happy to e-mail to anyone interested.

Hi All. Great trip so far, three days to get here from Red Deer, Alberta. we are retired so are taking our time! We arrived in Dawson Creek this afternoon. Site #53 at the mile 0 campground. Seems like a great place to spend the weekend relaxing. Take care all, and have a safe trip!

Today met artsyone as they had just pulled into the park (I suppose). This was a banner week for us - meeting two fellow forum members! That's pretty good considering we are all the way up here. So this makes three folks we have met from the forums!

Wasn't able to talk to artsyone very long as they were on their way someplace, but it was nice for them to drop by and say hi.

So who's next???

Finally back on--Gas at Fort Nelson on the Ak Hwy.is $5.50 a US gal. and was told its higher up the road.Spent last nite at a turn out 1 mile past Pink Mountain-Great spot-wide and gravel on the right side and FREE.Watch out for HORSES on the side of the road-there's 6 of em and they hang out around there. So far saw Bears,Moose,Deer Bald eagles,A sliver fox,and a whole lot of Huge mountains that we don't see back in Mi.Make sure your Vehicle is in EXCELLENT shape before you try this Trip cause they'll eat you up if it isn't.3 mile 8% grades are not uncommon,in fact there everywhere.Saw one sign that said Check your gas-next service 100km.Oh,and Beer-$13.00 a 6 pack,I had to give up drinkin til we get to Ak.But,it sure is Beautiful--Well,Back on the Road TTYL!! FMOS-we'll give you a heads up before we get there so you can save us a spot. Steve & Teresa

Crossed into Canada today on the scenic road from Glacier to Waterton. The border there is only open 9 AM to 6 PM and they just asked about guns, booze, and tobacco. Nothing about food.

In Canmore tonight and on to Banff in the morning.

Hi all,

New member but a long time reader.
Just arrived here in Fairbanks this after noon and finally connected to the Internet. Started reading this thread and noticed that Artsyone was here in Rivers Edge. Went to his site, said "hello" and talked for a few minutes. His wife suggested that I join the forum which I did. I am in 17G if anyone wants to stop by.

Real adventure coming up here. Had a stone crack the windshield and about 200 miles south of Watson Lake the wiper motor burned out. Drove about 6 hrs to Whitehorse in rain and snow without wipers. Finally after a week was able to install new motor and continue on. Well worth the trip.

We are leaving Lincoln, NE tomorrow and should be on the Alaska Highway around June 15. For those of you that have made the border crossings what are the rules for beef, pork and chicken for personal use? Is it a problem transporting meat like steaks, chicken breasts or pork chops into Canada or when leaving Canada entering the US. We enjoy reading the posts on this forum and hope to contribute once we get a little further north.

thecoates-
When we came through Canadian customs at Sweetgrass Montana a couple of weeks ago, we weren't asked anything at all about any food items just alcohol, tobacco & firearms. We were however asked about any foods we bought in Canada (which we had none) at the US Customs station coming into Alaska. Canadian customs can & sometimes does ask about food items but we have never been questioned about those things. The "rules" for going into Canada can be found at:
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/rc4161-eng.html#P015
(Sorry I don't know how to make it clickable) Safe travels.
