Stuck in Rochester NY, reading with envy of those of you on the road. Planning to be on the road to Alaska next year - again. We will just have to ignore family concerns and be selfish. We manage to go cross country every winter, but Alaska has just been out of our grasp.

I think we are staying here. We are looking around for winter volunteer positions or something. Maybe house sitting. Not sure yet, but hopefully around Soldotna or Anchorage. The winters there may be longer, but not as cold as ours last year. And, we just want to do it one time.
Glad to hear everyone on the road is enjoying the travel. My condolences to those who had to wait. When you get here, you will know that it is worth it.

So...Alaska got to you too! Join the club - it happens to a lot of folks, FMOS! Maybe, God and gas prices willing, we will be down your way and if so we'll stop a say howdy to our newest "residents"! LOL!

Saw a small station south of Watson Lake with signs out that they were cheaper then Watson Lake for gas. Pulled in and pumps were at 1.419/liter which was better than Fort Nelson, so I filled up. When I went to pay, he knocked another .01 off and only one charge card hit (one less international transaction fee than a station where limits cause multiple card insertions).
Gas in Watson Lake was 2 cents higher.
Continued north and stopped for fuel at the Yukon Motel and gas station in Teslin. Pump price was $1.419 also but they discounted RV fills 4 cents per liter!!!! Also payed inside and only had one credit card hit.
Good places to fuel.

Been there, done that..Watson Lake has an incredible vistor center at the sign post forest and they'll tell you about a park you can Dump & fill your water for FREE.If your dry campin your way through to save the money to put in the gas tank like we did, there are places all over the place to save a dime and dry camp.Comin up from Tampa, Fla. we only stoped at camp grounds 6 times in a month and 5 days. The Trick that worked best-stop at a local Bar in a town where you'll be stoppin after you go through the town.Talk to the locals about places to stop for Free after you leave the town. They're usually more than happy to tell you about a couple places outside town that are gravel pit or somethin along those lines.Especially at Happy hour.AND, don't stop at Muncho lake,if you can make it up to Liard Hot Springs its at least 25cents a liter cheaper. We saved almost $16.00.and went for an incredibly nice, relaxing dip in the hot springs.Always stop at Visitors Centers--They are a wealth of information!!!!So far we've gone 9100 miles and our gas tab is $4,600.00 . Currently we're at Denali, and gonna take the tour tomorrow mornin. Then headed down to Anchorage and on to deep creek.Spent 5 days in the Fairbanks area doin all kinds of cool stuff and took off this mornin for here.Gas prices in Canada were the pits{$5.50-6.00gal}but in Fairbanks ONLY $4.11gal.A little more around Denali. On The Road Through Alaska!! Can anyone tell me how the road is to Anchorage to Valdez and from Valdez to Whitehorse? Just been from Homer - Deep Creek - Cooper's Landing - Seward - Roads are good with a few frost heaves but nothing serious
The combat fishing starts tomorrow on the Kenai.
Fuel prices in Seward are $5.36 for diesel.
Everyone have a good trip

Well artsyone, the road from Anchorage to Valdez is a very pretty paved road similar to what you've already seen in Alaska. It's a beautiful drive with lots of wonderful vistas that I'm sure you'll love! Take your time and stop for pics and you'll do fine!
One note though if you are going into Valdez itself you'll have to cross Thompson Pass and it can be a climb! But if the weather is cooperative it's just another great view from the top!
Can't speak on the Whitehorse leg of your trip though.

And we are just behind you Mark. Checked in today at the Northern Lights rv park in dawson creek. We lost our rear view camera as we were coming into Grand Prairie last week and spend two days trying to find a replacement...no dice. So far in 1500 miles, the toad has been fine, so I guess it will continue to be fine until we get to Anchorage to a Monaco dealer.
In Grand Prairie, we stayed at Tamarack and it was a really nice park. A little close together, but lots of trees and nice and quite. Had trouble with the wifi until I got out the Cantenna and then it was fine.
We are going to drive the toad over to Chetwynd (60 miles) and check out the 4th annual chainsaw carving championship... should be lots of fun.
This country is just absolutely gorgeous. The people are friendly and helpful and make allowances for our ignorance of customs. I've cut a couple of cars off while trying to maneuver in the cities, and the most I get is a toot on the horn. In California, the fingers would be sticking out of every window! However, the farther north we get, the more I'm amazed at how light it is late at night. The roads could use a little more attention, but I'm completely aware of the circumstances. Like Mark mentioned above, I find myself down below 55 and many times at 45 while negotiating the frost heaves. I suspect it's gonna get much worse. So far the one piece windshield is untouched!
Heading for Ft. Nelson on Saturday.
See ya there

From Ft Nelson on up to Tok..it gets a little worse as you go,but there are still the area's that you can drive 55-60 mph. After Tok it kinda comes and goes{the frost heaves I mean}but seems to get a little better. We tried to see The Mountain in Denali, but she wouldn't show herself for the 2 days we were there. They said she only comes out for about 20% of the year, you just have to be there at the right time.Currently on our way to Deep Creek,Probly for a week or so..startin Sat. night.Maybe we'll see some of you there!!
