I prefer to be with the smaller crowd. I do agree that the campers make the differance but I don't want to hear a class A's generator kick in at 2am. I also don't want to be the odd ball in the full hookup section of a CG. The main thing is to be a curtious camper and respect who ever your neighbors are.
Other then gennies running late or a flat screen TV popping out of a side compartment I don't mind the big rigs. What I really try to avoid are the folks who are camping in one of those giant Walmart 12 person tents. They tend to be noisy, messy and have no idea about campground etiquette.
I agree with most everyone else. It's the people not the rig. That said, I don't look forward to hearing the big diesel generators found on the 50 amp rigs. The corp parks and state parks here can only handle 30 amps so once the 100 degree summer hits, I am guessing they will have to run the generators all night to power the "central air", plasma tvs, washer/dryer, etc. In case my brother-in-law reads this, I can't wait to meet up with y'all at a campground but don't be offended if we stay a few sites away.
I will echo what most have said, that it's the people and not their rig. However, I will say that I have noticed on occasion that some "big riggers" tend to look down on PUPpers like me. For instance, two years ago my wife and I were able to get away for the weekend without our kids (it was our anniversary), and unfortunately the only site available was a pull-through where we were surrounded by "big riggers". We definitely felt out of place and somewhat "lower class". The only good thing was that all the RVers were quietly tucked inside at night and couldn't here us "taking advantage" of being kid free that weekend!!
We stayed in the "wide open" section at a campground in Myrtle Beach last August. There were only two other pups in that section during the whole two weeks we were there. At first it was a little strange but we met some nice people amongst the fifth wheels and coaches in that area.
My only gripe with the place is that there is no entering the campground after midnight...I didn't like that at all....I mean, last I checked I was an adult. Anyway, the last week we were there I was awakened by slamming doors, a deisel engine running for I don't know how long, and people talking loudly...all at 1:00 AM. I wondered what happened to the rules. The site were tight but they didnt have to park their deisel TV 1 foot from my slideout window. Sheesh.
The next day my daughter was walking out of the bathhouse and a younger person from this group handed her a card advertising the fact that he was available to give her a tattoo is she so desired. (she was 13 years old at the time) He and his wife were covered in them as well as the other folks they were with who were staying a few sites away. They were in this huge fifth wheel. Nothing against tattoos at all and I certainly don't begrudge anyone their pleasures....but I must admit I had a stereotype about what kind of folks vacationed in a fiver. I did try to be friendly with them...they couldn't be bothered. Oh well....I had plenty of nice encounters with other folks....just wish they didn't give hubby the "fifth wheel bug." (After a few conversations he was ready to trade in our newly purchased Hemlock)
