I've been using the Hoover NanoLite for about a year now. It has a telescoping handle that makes it short enough to sit in my wardrobe when I travel.

The advantage that it has is that is has a full 13amp motor, is bagless, has carpet and floor setting, a removable hose for upholstery, and a very fine filter. Filter elements are about $20, and after a year, mine is still good to go.

This is the one we have in our trailer and it has been doing a great job for about 3 or 4 years.

Thanks for your help. Some of the suggestions were along the lines we were thinking.

We have the Eureka Yellow Jacket central vac. It is a little pricey but we're full timers and use it every day. Cost me about $500.00 with a power head for the carpet but it cleans like nobody's business. One of our dogs is a long hair that sheds like crazy (kind of like Charlie Brown's friend Pigpen except hair instead of dirt).

I think it's a colossal pain to get the 30' hose out and put it away again but my wife loves it. It's very powerful and picks up hair and dirt like nothing I've ever seen before.

If you do decide to spring for one of these things, be sure to get the electric power head for the carpets. The turbo (air) powered one stalls all the time under heavy load.

Started workamping Sept '07 - This isn't too bad. Think we'll do it some more.

We got the 2.5 gal ShopVac at Lowes. Then, went to a vac shop and picked up the hose tube extensions, so we don't have to bend over and it works great. Tons of power, light weight, and stores easy. Plus, if we ever need to clean up a leak or other wet situation, it'll do that too.

I bought a 1 gallon Shopvac from Walmart for about $20. Then bought a 3 piece Shopvac pipe set and a couple extra attachments from Ace Hardware. Then bought a 25 foot extension cord for it. I store it under one of my dinette bench seats.
