Hi We will be traveling from Rochester to NYC (Westchester county) We have three options route 81 to 17; route 81 to 84 or straight route 90 to 87. We are wondering if route 17 is a "highway or interstate" or is it just stops and lights and not a real thoroughfare. We appreciate your help.

17 is a 2 lane divided highway, 3 lanes at times - speed limit switches between 65 and 55 in places - oh and not that it really matters but there is 1 stop light as it goes by a small town (strange) but rest road is exits off it - hope this helps

The shortest, cheapest and most scenic route is 81 to 17. The only negative about 17 is it is very hilly in parts but 84 is the same or worse and is longer.
The Thruway is expensive, longer, but mostly flat.
My vote is 81 to 17 to Thruway to Tappan Zee Bridge
