We have a 30 foot HR with 3 slides and we also have two 11.5 foot kayaks. When we travel, we put the kayaks inside the fiver but as you might guess, it's awkward and quite a pain in the rear to have them in there.

I am considering building some sort of cradle to haul them underneath in front of the axles. I have no idea whether this will work or not. I have the clearance but that's all I know. Does anyone out there have any experience in successfully (or unsuccessfully) doing this? What would the wind do to them?

Thanks,
g2

Hi Geetwo,

I built a rack to carry two 11' kayaks on the back of my 5th wheel. I have hauled my kayaks thousands of miles with these racks. This isn't what you were asking about but it is another option.

Good luck and happy kayaking,

Mike

I tried making all kinds of racks to hold our two yaks. For the last two years we put them both on top of our truck in a standard kayak rack. I just made sure to strap them in far enough forward not to interfere with the swing of the front end of the fiver.
Mike - beautiful job on that back end rack. The one we made was just too wobbly to trust it near the back window.

We're trying to figure out how to carry our 2 sea kayaks: each 18 ft long and 26" wide and 58 lbs. We're thinking about carrying them on the roof of the 5er, but getting them up there will be interesting.

We saw a Class c with a shorter kayak on the roof - looked good and safe.

G2, We have two 13' yaks and I carry them on the roof of our truck with a Yakima roof rack. We had an F250 CC short bed before, so I installed a front receiver hitch and used a Yakima goal post rack on the front and put the yaks over the cab and hood. This worked well. Now we have an F350 CC long bed with lots of clearance for the 5er to swing, but we haven't carried them yet. I think I'll be able to carry them over the cab only.

Yakima has a device called hully raisers to mount to the roof rack to get them up at an angle. We carried ours flat on the beams of the roof rack with pads and straps. The kayaking industry makes racks designed for your vehicle to carry safely with the 5er. Go to a local bike shop or REI. We got ours at Mountain Sports.

They are in Arlington, TX, but they ship all over. Good luck! QT2

Thanks for all the suggestions. We are currently in South Texas and when we get back to Indiana, I'm going to talk to my friendly welding shop and see what we can come up with.

Hi geetwo, take a look at our profile page. The roof rack was designed to carry 2 mountain bikes and 2 13' yaks. It worked great on our 6,500 mile trip last summer. It was quite easy for my DW and I to put the yaks up and take them down.

The rack was designed with enough strentgh that I could stand on the cross members with no problems to take the mountain bikes down or put them up, even with the 5er hitched up.

cheers,
Roy

We have a 14ft canoe, I use the yak roof mount and a homemade rack on the front bumper of the truck. Keeps everything forward enough to miss the front of the 5ver.
Have never heard of hauling under the front of the trailer, I would think they would pick up a lot of road grime dust and dirt. If there was some way to inclose it without adding alot of weight just may work.
