I plan to carry a couple extra diesel fuel cans with me so I can have 10 gallons or so in case I need it. I have seen the yellow plastic 5- 6 gallon cans and also remember when I was much younger that many folks carried gas or diesel in a metal container. What is recommended for those who carry extra fuel - plastic or metal? and why do you recomment that type of can?

EPA has changed the environment of fuel can. The metal jerry can of olden days is too expensive. The 5 gallon plastic ones with the vent cap are no longer EPA approved; so we have 5 gallon plastic fuel can that the venting is through the spout. Which takes longer to empty. I have two of those can for my motorhome. Fill them with 4 gallons as to not cause a leak around the cheep caps. They really are a pain but if you have to have them - I would suggest two things. Walmart is where I got mine for 5.88 each. (maybe thats my problem?) and I put then in a trash bag while I have t hem in my toad.

I have 4 plastic 5 gal can for diesel, lost track of the dozen plus or minus red ones from one to 5 gals in size. None of them leak, unless I do not screw the ca on tight enough!

Some have the little cap on the back to vent, hence faster pour, others vent thru the built in funnel. One cap/funnel I have, you push down on the funnel, and it will let teh fuel out, otherwise, it can be upside down and not leak. use that one on my boat, as that is the only marine or coast guard approved funnel/cap that I know of.

Reality is, having had not sure how many miles of driving around the US etc, I have yet to NOT find diesel with in a tank range of my trucks. I have gotten to the point, I do not worry about carrying an extra can. On the boat......that is another story at this time, but even at that, I can find fuel with in the 8 hrs that my tank will last.

On a related note, I carry a 2 gal fuel can for the Honda gen set on a bumper rack on the back of my TT. Is there any DOT requirement that this be a metal can? Is it illegal at all? Seems to me a metal can would be safer, but where to buy one?

You can buy metal safety cans from Northern Tool. IIRC they run about $40

I'm sure you could even find them if there is a Co-op in your area.

I have several plastic cans of all sizes and 2 metal 5 gal jerry cans. I have used the 2 metal one's off and on since the 70's. When gas went to $3 started to use the metal cans more and run a chain through the handle's to lock them to the trailer. I see the metal cans and spouts at a surplus store I shop at so you can still buy them.

I once tried to take my plastic cans aboard a Washington State Ferry, but was rebuked because my "can" wasn't DOT approved. Now I have metal DOT cans - got mine from Northern Tool with a large nozzle.

Be careful when using metal cans for diesel fuel. The diesel can leach particles from some galvanized cans into the fuel, which could damage your engine.

I used the 2, 5gal Yellow plastic cans from Wal-Mart, they were under $6. Never had a problem with them leaking.
