JT and others: I don't know what kind of activities the girls like! My "girls" are married now and I could not afford to RV or vacation when they were young. I'm thinking hiking,(not too strenous) biking, beach, swimming pool, exploring, etc. Laura's brother lives in Glendora, California which is in the LA area. He probably would not mind driving six to eight hours to meet us.
I am immunsuppressed, so I have to stay out of the endemic areas for valley fever. This includes most of Southern and Central California - mostly the desert region. Anywhere it gets cold in the winter and where there are pine trees seems to be ok.
I have a lot to work with already. You folks are great! Thanks for all the suggestions!

Just went to valleyfever.org and So. Cal. wasn't listed as part of the endemic area...Central Valley of California was, most high desert areas, as well as Arizona and Texas.

There are some nice rustic campgrounds in the Big Sur area. Some of them have partial hookups and you may still be able to get a reservation. Big Sur is beautiful; the hike out to Andrew Molera State Beach is unforgettable.
The girls would probably like to visit the Pismo Beach/Morro Bay area too. My daughter just took her very first spring break road trip with two friends and stayed at one of the state parks in Morro Bay. That was their destination of choice (probably based upon my daughter's experiences staying there with us). They went to Hearst Castle, Santa Barbara (lots of shopping along State Street) and visited Cal Poly in SLO. The girls may also want to check out UCSB. We've stayed in Pismo Beach and Morro Bay many times and sometimes have let the kids rent ATV's. It's not cheap, but they would get a real kick out of it and never forget it. An adult would have to go with them (isn't that sad !).
Instead of just staying at one place, you might want to start in Morro Bay and drive north.
They would like Santa Cruz too. The downtown is fun for shopping, the redwood hikes are beautiful, and the beaches are great. Oh yes, I forgot the Boardwalk!
