One of our favorite parks in Michigan that has not been mentioned is Rifle River Recreation Area. It has both modern (electric) and primitive areas. It has lots of hiking and biking trails. Lakes with sand beaches for swiming. Canoeing is available on the Rifle river that begins in the park.

Have only stayed in one State Park in the last 8 years and that was Fort Wilkins in Copper Harbor, there was to much smoke, sites to small with to many untrimmed limbs, park management didn't know how big camp sites were, kids running threw sites, drunken groups, and ripped off by the state on fees. I don't plan on using a Michigan State park again until there are changes in management up in Lansing and on the fees the tax payers of Michigan are charged.
Proper management of and by DNR is lacking threw out the state. Michigan has some of the best State Parks in the country but over charge the people using them and use as a political tool when it suites them in Lansing.

We stayed at Interlochen last year - kind of a memory trip for us since both of us attended Interlochen music camp as HS kids, watch going swimming for swimmers itch though. Some of our favorites - Straits when visiting that area - good location to get to ferries to island, good view of bridge, Muskelounge for nice lake to swim & fish plus the shore of the big lake, close to falls & Soo, and Porkies for a totally diff. MI experience.

Our favorite is probably Fort Custer Rec Area (maybe cause we only live 10 miles away).
Next would be Interlochen and then Ludington followed by Straits.
Almost all the state parks we've been too are pretty good.

What a great topic!! We've only stayed at Muskegon SP so far, but we keep going back because we just love being on the channel and having that view. We also like being able to have a short walk to both Muskegon Lake & Lake Michigan. Muskegon also has some nice walking trails as well. I'm hoping more poeple post their favorites so we can get other ideas of places to go.

Thanks for all of the good feedback. Sounds like McClain is something we need to try sometime...but it's a heck of a drive from Ohio. Since I asked the question, I should reply with some of our favorites.
Wilderness - I'm surprised I was the only one to mention this. Great location west of Mackinaw City, secluded location. Just a great spot.
Interlochen - Had a great time there last year. Good base to explore Traverse City, and Lake Michigan towns like Glen Arbor and Frankfort. We have a waterfront site in June.
PH Hoeft - Again no talk about this place, but a really good campground. Not much in the area to do, but if you want a quiet spot close to Lake Huron with good sized sites, give it a try.

Our favorite has to be Port Crescent State Park. It is right on the water with 3 miles of beach to walk, sunsets over the water, and just a nice family campground. It is a little tough to get into because there are only 136 sites and only about 20 I'd put my trailer in. But we go there about twice a year once in June and once in October for Halloween. Another of our favorites is Holland State Park(Lake Macatawa, not the beach campground unless you like camping in a parking lot). There is a nice 1/2 mile walk on a nice walkway to the Lake Michigan beach.

Just going to bump this up one more time and that's it.
One spot I still want to try is the Platte River campground at Sleeping Bear...I hear that is a great campground. Only a small percentage of sites are available via reservation, so if someone can recommend the best day/time to show up and get a site, please let me know.
Thanks.

I had a differenct experience at Fort Wilkins. I found it very peaceful and actually one of the highlights of the trip that year. Yes, it was mid-summer also. There is a laundry right inthe campground; at night you can hear the buoy ringing in Lake Superior, you're that close. What a great memory.
