Since I'm planning on going to Sturgis in SD. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to buy a Deer Whistle Air through or electronic type to be mounted on my truck pulling my travel trailer. Doing some extensive research with my time off from work. I came to the conclusion there is no real answers if they do work or Not. The Deer Whistle been out since 1970 and many researchers have not come up with any scientific results. Does a deer or animal hear a certain frequency like 16 to 20 Hz? The whistles are suppose to generated a range of frequency that can be heard by deer’s and other animals. The pro's & Con's of the whistle vary and makes you think if it's worth the money & time. Some say it better to be safe than sorry not having one. The cost range is from $5.00 to $300.00. So which one is better, no one can answer that. It’s a preference in looks, price, and how it could be mounted. Maybe one day DOT (Dept. of Transportation) will come up with some scientific facts to make a devise that will prevent accidents and injuries from "Deer Vehicle Crashes" (DVC).

Here is a quote I found this on a website:

The Save-A-Deer whistle is the smallest and best single unit air-activated animal alert /automobile deer whistle design on the market today. When mounted to a vehicle, car, truck, or motorcycle moving at 35 mph or faster, the deer whistle makes a sound that alerts deer, moose, elk, antelope, and kangaroos of the approaching vehicle and assists with accident prevention. Animals are very unpredictable, but they will usually respond by freezing along the side of the road avoiding vehicle collision. Occasionally the animals will perk their ears and look over at the vehicle. You should always exercise caution when driving in areas heavily populated with animals. You should examine the deer whistle occasionally to be sure it is still mounted to the vehicle and does not have any blockage in the holes. Our whistles make a great auto deer protection device to help reduce chances of deer and vehicle collisions. Over 2 million Save-A-Deer whistles have been sold worldwide!

Orginal Question I had does a Deer Whistle work or not? Should I save my money & time and not get one?

One of my brother-in-laws had hid several deer one year so I ask if those deer whistles worked. He said well if you think they work go look at the front of my truck. It was all smashed in so I guess they didnt work for him

Here is an article about collision avoidance with animals:

Deer Whistles

Deer whistles are discussed about halfway down the page.

The opinion is that deer whistles work best in separating a RVer and his $$ and not much else.

I live in deer country. And some folks have them, not many. They stick on and fall off. Also if a bug lands in the openings it will block, but you will not know it until you stop and look at them. And I cannot stand the thought of sticking them funny looking things on any of my vehicles. And the have to be place a certain way for air flow. I have hit one deer, in my old toyota PU, but I had a deer hit me also. I had my brand new Scion Xb, about 9 days, I was doing about 10 MPH, just around the croner , and SMACK, I was like the %$#@&&^%%^$#&$%^&$&%*&^&*^(^^$%%$%^&^()()*(&*(^, the deer didn't even fall down. But man it wiped out my front fender and a truck full of plastic parts. Could do like my neighbor. He had an older PU, and he hit one. Well he patched the truck up and put on a major brush guard, not your typical tubular one. This one was made of 3/8s flat iron. The perimeter was the flat iron laid out flat, with some other metals form in the middle. Well the next time a deer crossed his path, he just floored it, hit the deer about 70 to 75 MPH. Well needless to say he drove that truck a few more years. And we never did see half of that deer. 'bout cut it in half. Told him he should weld some finish mower blades to it, and he could quarter it as he went through it. Oh another good one. One night I was coming home from work, and this station wagon in front of me had 2 folks looking at each other while talking. Well I started slowing down and flashing my lights when I see a deer running across this field. I even laid on the horn, but these 2 just kept on talking. I slowed down to a crawl. I could see if someone did not stop it was going to be a mess. This wagon hit that deer at 60 MPH dead center of the grill, the car grill. I mean it looked like a bomb went off under the front of that car. Pieces went in the air , I bet 50 ft. The poor dear just flew up and started going end over end. It was the wildest thing I have ever seen, well close anyway.
