Marly, for goodness' sake, don't let the wildlife officials know our secret about the deer whistles calling-in deer. That's how we hunt them in these parts, without needing a hunting license. Otherwise, the game wardens would make us buy a license and wouldn't let us hunt from a car anymore.
The wolf-whistles work on dears, too.

The fleet manager where I used to work installed them on about 800 cars. He said they did make a statistical difference, I think about 20%. Worthwhile for a fleet, but on an individual basis you probably can't tell.

I wouldn't argue with the 20%, sounds reasonable but even with 800 car sampling the margin of error is very large, unless you can duplicate everything else also, miles driven miles in crossing areas, weather from one year to another...
not trying to be smart, but 20% could be realized from one year to the next without doing anything unless all things are equal from one year to the next (they are not)...
just setting up feed zones away from highways could make a big difference by changing the traffic patterns for the deer... motion detection and radar like devices that warn when a deer is in a high rate kill area...there are many things that would make a big difference, if they were used (I just don't think whistles are among them)...
and if you feel better or believe using them works, by all means use them...
if only I was the inventor or even the marketer for them from the beginning, I would be singing a different tune...

Let me ask you a question. If deer are bedded down and you drive by, you don't even know it. If you install deer whistles and drive by they may get up and run. Which way are they going to run?
If they work, the only thing they can do is make the deer run...no guarantee that they are going to run away. Save your money and save the deer! ;-)

one might conclude that if the whistles really work there are an awful lot of deaf deer out there.

In the 70's living in the Sierra Nevada Mountains we used to weld up steel bars to the front of our trucks. They are called "Brush Guards" now. Back then we called them "Bambi Baskets". Venison tastes good cooked over Mesquite and Pine.

BUT WHAT WOULD HE DO IF I WHISTLED AT YOU!!!
I will even get permission from my DW first...
just something to think about... if there was a inkling they worked, you insurance would at the very least offer a discount for using them and be lobbying Washington to mandate them... as a single item this is a huge cost to them collectively...
I would think auto mfg's would offer the option also... it seem to me they are so ineffective they would be considered as a liability to the auto mfg's if they didn't work...
I am sure both have considered and studied this...
