Looking for a campground near Washington D.C. Will be traveling there mid June with five grand kids. Shuttle and/or tours from cg to the capitol would be great.
Cherry Hill Park. The only option, in my opinion. We were there for 5 days last August and were very impressed by the campground, management and relative ease to get into D.C.. Plan on about an hour to get into DC, though, depending upon bus/train connection times. You can buy your bus/train tickets right at the campground and the bus will pick you up in the campground. If you have any questions about the Metro system, the staff is very helpful.
By the way, if you've never been to DC before, you may wish to review this website for the Metro system. It can be confusing if you're not used to train/subway systems. But once you get the hang of it, it's a very nice transportation system.
With kids, ask for a site near a playground. Our kids loved the wading pool, so make sure they have their bathing suits.

Cherry Hill is your best bet. Close to Washington Area Metro Transit that will get you downtown. The METRO Orange Line puts you right in the middle of the National Mall. There is a METRO station (Green Line) about a mile or from the cg south on Route 1 in College Park, MD. You can drive your car down there or pick up the Metro shuttle bus at the cg store. The METRO is very user friendly.
Organized tours leave right from ther CG and the staff understand what the tourists need and know how to get them there. They have a little seminar that explains how to get downtown and what to see.
You can take the organized tour or get downtown yourself and jump on a Tour Mobile or one of the Duck Tours

Hi All: I did not ask the question but DW and I have been considering a trip to DC area for the past couple of years. From the sounds of it Cherry Hills is the campground to stay at. How far in advance of arrival should reservations be made? Is Cherry Hills a hard place to locate? Thanks for the information. Jim2007
Just like Rick Jay said, Cherry Hill is the best place and definitely check out the metro schedules and routes.
When we were there 2 years ago, the metro bus from the CG was a big help. From there, you can get to anywhere because the longest walk to any attraction you'll encounter will be about 1/2 mile - most are a lot less.
Don't forget to check out the National Zoo, it's free and AWESOME!

My wife and I stayed at Cherry Hill last month. Excellent park. 26 degrees at night (rough on the old folks from Southern California). Not many people there in March. I suspect you might want to get reservations during the summer months. There were a lot of things for the kids to do in the park. Staff was very helpful.
Another vote for Cherry Hill Park!! We stayed there last summer. DH bought a GPS system for our trip, from West Texas to Niagara Falls, Vermont, Connecticut, D.C., and "Lola" (because we are sooo not creative, and if the name worked in the movie, RV, it works for us!!!) delivered us right to Cherry Hill -- well, with the exception of DH not listening to "Lola" and zigged when he should have zagged, but "she" got us right back on the right street, and we made it there.
If you ask 10-year old DD the best part of the trip, she will say "the Metro."
We already want to return and spend longer in D.C., and Cherry Hill.
