So is it safe? The tent is breathable so shouldn't I have circulation? I thought about buying a carbon monoxide detector.

I fall into the cautious side of camp that would not use any type of heater in a tent. But I have a friend who has done so many times --and lived to tell about it.

When we were tent camping, we used a small ceramic heater, which was placed on a "table" for stability.

I've used a my buddy propane heatera few times with no trouble. I have a friend who has used one during deer season for several years.

Normally I will turn in on and let it heat everything up good and turn it off before hitting the sack. Next morning will fire it up to heat things up while changing clothes etc... All my tents have a fair amt of mesh in the ceiling to allow for adequate ventalation and I will leave a window cracked as well.

I use one of the little coleman heaters on the end of the propane bottles in the same way rhondavid mentions. I'm sure it's safe to leave it on, but I can't get myself to trust propane being on overnight. I'm more concerned with the fire aspect than CO. I've burned a hole in the bottom of my then when I put the handle on the wrong side, so I'm sure having it touch something fabric like would run the risk of fire.

To piggy back on this topic . We are going camping next week and I was wondering if a small electric heater or two would be ok in a tent? We are fairly new to camping and have never gone in early spring.

I only use my propane in my tents that have enough room so as there is no danger of it coming in contact with anything. I guess that could apply to electric also. Just be careful if it's wet outside.
