Some of you may know of this, but I only found it a few days ago.
At mile marker 24 on SR 9,(south side) just a few miles west of Springdale, UT is a "Public" camping (14 day limit) area on the flood plain of the Virgin River. The area is sandy but has several hard packed roads that wonder through the trees. I saw several small rigs. Travel trailers, truck campers and tents. Due to the road conditions and the overhang trees, I don't think there are many sites where a large motorhome could park.
As this is only a few miles from Springdale, it would be a great place to stay while visiting Zion National Park.

We saw some folks get flooded and stuck in the wet sand in that area back in April of 2006, during a sudden and unexpected downpour. Nobody got hurt, and no rigs were destroyed, but there were some wet people and some happy tow truck drivers. I'm not saying don't stay there -- just check the forecast.
I saw that spot on the way in two weeks ago. There were five or six parties camped there. Looked nice except for the idea of camping in a desert river bottom being a little dicey. We stayed at Watchtower in the park. The views there are sweet.
The area is sometimes called Mosquito Cove. Here's more on it: infoCove
Beware of the potential for flash floods. Also be wary of the soil which can become very boggy in spots when wet and deep sand other times. Otherwise, a nice place and gorgeous in the Fall when the cottonwoods all turn yellow.

We pulled into it on our way to Zion about 4 years ago. The 'Wildman' son was with us and talked me into stopping with our 32' Class'A'. I was very reluctant, but gave in. It wasn't bad at all. Plenty of room and even found a site rite on the river. I didn't realize it was a "flash flood" danger area at the time tho. If U do stop there, ask about the really neat GHost Town about a 2 miles west of there. Not many outsiders know of it.

I am not quite sure where mile post 24 is but the ghost town may very well be Grafton, that is where the adobe house and bicycle scenes in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed.
I checked out the milepost 24 site. I did see some rigs in there, but I decided against it. It's mostly soft sand, and I could only imagine what it would be like in strong winds.
Here's another spot a bit west of the town of Virgin UT: 37.205175,-113.240204
It's about a 13 mile drive into Springdale. There's an internet cafe just a couple miles east in Virgin.
