Does anyone know if the stereo is warrantied through Ford or through the rv manufacturer? (Coachmen in our case) Ours likes to eat CDs and not give them back, and won't play them. Since it is hooked into the coach battery, I wondered if it was added by Coachmen. I would like to have it replaced, but don't want to ask the wrong people if I can help it. Thanks!

I'm sure if you call Coachmen, they'll say it's Ford!

Our original radio was Jensen and would not play AM. I just took it to the dealer and they replaced it no problem, even gave me a new remote and left the old remote so now I have two remote controls for the dash radio. I tend to use a remote even when driving.

Once you're out of warranty, then please do go to an auto audio specialist.
My original Ford radio and speakers (no doubt spec'd for the cheapest van they make) was terrible. For around $400 you can get an audio unit + improved door speakers that will play CD's, MP3, control your iPod and do what you want exactly.
I found other good solutions for about half that price as well, depending on your requirements.

They guys at the big box stores just wanted to sell me this week's circular, and an uptick on the installation charge because, without even looking at the rig, they decided that any RV is not a standard installtion.
Before even demonstrating the unit, one guy had a plastic shrink-wrapped box in hand while extolling the virtues of the product and the extended warranty in the same sentence.

If it is a factory Ford system it should be covered by the Ford warranty. If it's aftermarket, who knows? Maybe Coachmen, maybe you're out of luck. As far as Ford system, it's been my experience that they are overpriced and of poor quality. I have an Alpine single CD player in my Gulfstream and even with the stock speakers it sounds much better than the "premium sound" system in our Explorer.

Thanks everyone. I tried my local Coachmen dealer, and they say they don't touch sound systems in the cab. I emailed Coachmen for support and haven't heard back. I am guessing that for now we will probably just make do with our ipods and portable speakers. Just wanted to have it functional if at all possible without spending my $$. By the time we get home after our summer trip the warranty will be up. That will make it easier to justify leaving the cds home for the summer as we head to Montana. I'm sure I'll find something to take that storage spot!

If you're handy with that stuff you can order a stereo from Crutchfield to replace it. I am installing one right now in mine to replace the Ford one.
If not go to a car stereo place to have it done.
I have the top of the line factory system in my 04 SVT Focus and it's pretty damn good (I listen to hard rock....loud) so the car manufacturers are listening....albeit slowly.

Check with the stereo manufacturer, they should have some type of warranty coverage.

The no-brainer here is that OEM stereos use a standard chassis (mount) and dual DIN plugs. It's not like it used to be where you have to wire it manually. Even if an application isn't directly compatible, there are install kits that make them compatible. The stereo shop won't tell you this: they'd rather charge you for an install. I left the biz about 10 years ago but I've heard through the grapevine that it's still the case.
I used to work in a wrecking yard and I was always amazed at the replacement value of OEM stereos. IIRC, the CD player and EQ in a 98ish Dodge Stealth was over $1000. You could do a lot better shopping on your own with that kind of $$ !
What's the make of the stereo ? That'll tell you if it's the OEM brand at least. Not guaranteed, but it might exclude Ford if it's not in their inventory. Might also be worthwhile to see if the stereo manufacturer offered the model number as a retail product. If so, it could well be a Coachman issue. Just a thought...
