Anybody have experience with metal detectors? I am interested in purchasing one ( under or close to $400 ) but there are so many to choose from and they all make great claims. Can someone recommend one?

Big 5 Sporting goods has some great sale prices on them...I bought 2 Famous Trail Discriminater 2 for camping fun around Christmas for $79.00 each, lots of features and lots of fun! Bounty Hunter also has a bunch from cheap to pro models. You might start out at the low end, to see if you really want to be a treasure hunter...most folks I've seen have uncovered spoons, pop tops, pennies and cans! Whoopee!
I bought my wife one of the Metal Detectors for xmas, had her unwrap it first, then she had to go out in the back yard and find the other gifts that I had burried in the yard! Found them all, and you talk about funny, she was in her bathrobe with her new metal detector and a shovel on Christmas morning! I made up for it when she found her new gold diamond ring! Those things sure work well!

I have a Fisher CZ-7, its a great machine. I have had a whites and garret too but perfer my CZ-7. Its very stable. CZ-5 and CZ-6 are good machines too. You wont find one of these for $400 unless its used and it would be worth it. I paid $900 for mine about 11 or 12 years ago.

Just bumping this to see if I can get any suggestions or tips on how to use a metal detector. Just purchased a bounty hunter sharp shooter II.
Hope to have a lot of fun with it but don't expect to find the "big one".
Thanks,
Jim

Practice, practice, practice. Perferably in sandy/soft soil so you dont get discouaged right away. learn what the different targets sound like campared to your screen. The screen is just an educated guess.
Research your search areas for maximum booty, old houses, old state fair grounds, train/stagecoach stations, beach area's, around old trees.
Take your time, get permission for pvt proprety, fill in your holes, get on a metal detection forum and learn.....Have Fun!!

My luck would deliver a really white Christmas on Christmas Eve, and I'd be out there shoveling a path for her to do the detecting!!
But a really great idea. I'll file that away for future use.
